Materials For Acrylic Bird Paintings
- A picture or photo to use as a guideline (see some examples below).
- Your painting surface – canvas, wood, etc.
- Acrylic Paint assortment of colors (blue, green, browns, red, yellow, white, black) use your picture to see what colors you’ll need.
- Paint brushes – a small round, a small to medium flat, a fine detail brush and maybe a fan brush for foliage.
- Wet Palette or a plain palette
- Bowl of water
- Graphite paper
- Pencil
- Paper towels or a clean rag
- Acrylic sealer if your painting on wood (optional for canvas)
Decide on a picture first. You can enlarge and print out any of the pictures below if you want. Just right click on it and save the image to your computer. Then you can print it out. You could also draw your picture or find something you like online.
Paint The Background Color First
You can add the detail later. In my picture I wanted it to look like a sunset. I mixed yellow with red to get various shades of orange. Use a flat brush, dip it in the water and squeeze some out on the edge. Add different shades of color and paint in circular motions starting from the outside and working inwards. Keep dipping your brush in the water when it’s dry and squeeze the excess water out on the side of the bowl adding more paint and blending until you get to the center of your circle. It looks nice if the center of your circle is off to one side of the painting.
You may decide on a blue sky as your background. Another option would be a green background and later add leaves to have your bird in a tree. A white background would be snow. Let it completely dry.
Painting Your Bird Is the Fun Part
With your bird picture that you selected, transfer it to your background using graphite paper. Using your picture as a guideline, paint your bird with a small round brush. Use your fine detail brush for the tiny details. Let it dry completely.
Add a little more life to the background with trees, branches, and/or flowers. Use your picture as a guideline or your imagination and see what you can come up with. Just try not to overpower the main focus of your painting, the bird or birds. I used my fan brush to make some evergreen foliage. Let it dry completely.
If your painting is on wood, I recommend an acrylic paint sealer. It’s optional if you’re using canvas.
