Snowman art project done during the night

Day 1: We read the story Snowmen At Night, , and then I demonstrate how to draw a snowman (not just 3 circles balancing precariously on top of one another!) but overlapping circles! (that don’t have to be perfect) Then I ask them to decide where their light source is going to be (the moon), and then we figure out what side the shadows will be on. (the opposite side) Start out dark with the blue oil pastel, and then get lighter. Don’t forget to shade underneath the snowman or snowwoman 😉

Snowmen at Night Art Project

This week I was inspired by the book Snowmen at Night. I am sure you all have seen it but if you haven’t, it is priceless! In this story, snowmen have fun at night when the children have all gone to bed. What makes this books special is the art work. It is great for teaching perspective and shadowing. Conveniently, our author this week is Nina Laden and we had already read “The Night I Followed the Dog“. Both books have the theme of what exactly goes on once the humans go to bed. We made lots of connections to Nina Laden when we read Snowmen at Night by: Caralyn Buehner

First we read the book Snowmen at Night. Then we watched a wonderful demonstration lesson on Youtube by: Katerina Kyriakakis. You can find the link here. There are a lot of these videos on there now. Then we practiced using chalk pastels first. It’s important to practice first using a new medium so that you can get used to how it is applied and how it looks. Sometimes (okay, a lot of times), kids get frustrated when their image doesn’t look the way they imagined it to look. I always show them ways to use what they created and change it in a way that they may not have thought about. That’s a whole other topic!

The children loved this drawing lesson and enjoyed shading. Their finished pictures were adorable!

Winter is a fun time for students. Not only do many children experience the joy that snow can bring, they also love learning about winter animals. For another fun learning and artistic winter project on Penguins, click here.

About Me

My name is Lauren, and here’s a little bit about me. This my 17th year teaching art, and I’m so blessed, and thank God, to have this amazing job! In 2004 I graduated from APSU with a degree in Art Education, and in 2007 I completed my graduate degree in Educational Leadership. Our school is a Title 1, K-5 Elementary school, so I get to teach a wide variety of ages! These children are so sweet, give such great effort, and are so talented, I had to create a space where I could display their art. In my free time, I love spending time with my family, and sometimes make a little time for an archery tournament or two! Hope you enjoy their art as much as I do! You’re welcome to try some of these projects at home!

Keep creating!
Have a blessed day!
