Proper storage of stain brushes overnight

Brushes are some of the most essential artists’ tools, so it’s imperative they’re properly looked after – allowing them to perform to their highest potential. Over time, taking care of your brushes can save you time and money. Good quality brushes, such as those in our iconic Series 7 range, can last a lifetime if treated well.

Adhere to the following three standards of brush care and you’ll be well equipped with the knowledge to keep your prized materials in a state to produce stellar results.

How to clean your brushes thoroughly and properly

When pigment particles build up at the base of the brush, it pushes hairs apart and stops the point from forming. To avoid this, wipe your watercolour brush clean with a lint-free rag and rinse it under running water. Then, using mild soap and cool water, swirl the soapy brush in the palm of your hand and rinse. Repeat the washing and rinsing process until the waters run clear.

If you’ve been working with oils, use a rag to wipe away as much colour as possible from your brush. Then rinse any remaining colour using Winsor & Newton Artists’ White Spirit or Brush Cleaner. Next, as you would when cleaning your hands, create a lather and rinse the brush under warm, not hot, water until the water runs clear of colour and soap.

Looking after an acrylic brush is in some ways similar to looking after a watercolour brush. But there are also some differences. If you are using solvent-based varnishes, these should be removed using Winsor & Newton Artists’ White Spirit, whereas water-based varnishes can be removed with soap and water. Cleaning your acrylic brush with mild soap and cool water still applies. For a thorough clean, soak the brush overnight in Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner, which will remove any dried acrylic colour. Repeat the washing and rinsing process until the water runs clear.

What to avoid

Watercolour brushes are delicate, and strong soap may damage the bristles by removing natural oils. Keep your water warm, but not hot, as hot water may cause any remaining paint to clot.

Stay away from detergent, as this will damage the individual bristles on your brush. Another thing to avoid is paint stripper. Many artists use it to resuscitate a brush with dried paint on it, but this often takes the shape away from your brush.

The most important thing to remember about caring for your acrylic brushes is not to let paint dry after you’ve used it. The paint is not soluble in this state and will produce a plastic-like dried texture. So be sure to wash your acrylic brushes immediately after use. If you cannot wash acrylic brushes while painting, leave them in water, at the very least, during your practice.

How to Store Oil Paint Brushes Between Coats (Overnight)

When you are painting but need to stop for the night, cleaning your paint brushes is likely not on your list of things you want to do. Luckily, you can protect your oil paint brush overnight so you can continue using it the following day. The process is really simple and doesn’t require much effort at all, making it way easier than cleaning your paint brush.

If you are going to use the paint brush within 24 hours of storing it, all you need to do is wrap it really tight in some cling film. You will also want to create a seal around the neck of the paint brush with some masking tape. This will prevent oxygen from reaching the bristles and drying out the paint.

Store your wrapped paint brush in an area that is away from direct sunlight and a heat source. Both of these will speed up the drying process of the paint, which you don’t want to happen while you are storing your brush.

If you are not going to use the paint within 24 hours but just slightly after, you will still follow the steps above, but you will take a couple extra steps. After you have your oil paint brush wrapped and taped, you are going to put it in an airtight plastic bag.

After you place the paint brush in the plastic bag, squeeze all of the air out and close it tightly. You will then want to put the airtight bag in your refrigerator to keep the paint fresh. Since the fridge is a cool, dark place, you don’t need to worry about the paint drying out.

How Do You Keep Oil Paint Brushes from Drying Out?

There are several reasons you want to prevent your oil paint brushes from drying out between coats. If you are just taking a short break and you want to keep your oil paint brush from drying out, the process is much simpler than if you are storing the brush overnight.

When you are just taking a short break, the only thing you need to do to prevent your oil paint brush from drying out is cover it with a newspaper or cloth and leave some of the brush in the paint. For example, you will leave just the bottom one-third of the bristles in the paint, then lay a cloth or newspaper over the paint and brush before you walk away.

This will prevent the paint from drying out while you take your break as well as prevent the brush overloading with paint by keeping the whole brush in the oil paint. This will make it easy for you to pick up where you left off and prevent wasting product.

How Long Can You Leave Oil Paint on Brushes?

You can leave oil paint on paint brushes for about an hour without worrying that it will dry out. If you have to take a break longer than an hour, it is highly recommended that you properly protect the paint brush by wrapping it and placing it somewhere safe.

Even if your break is just an hour, you should still take precautions and cover your paint brush with a cloth or newspaper. This will work to keep any unnecessary oxygen away from your paint brush and prevent the oil paint from drying out during your short break.

PROFESSIONALS’ SECRETS FOR PREPARING AND USING PAINT ROLLERS AND BRUSHES

When you have invested in professional brushes and rollers, it is worth taking a little trouble to prepare and care for them properly. Follow our top professionals’ secrets to ensure a beautiful finish to every paint job.

Paint Brushes

How to Break in a New Paint Brush

Brush the bristles back and forth against your hand to loosen them. Slap the brush on a hard surface and then spin it around by the handle to ensure that any loose bristles are freed. Dip the brush into your paint and then paint an X shape on some sheets of newspaper, going over it until all the paint on the brush is used. Examine the brush and cut off any misshaped bristles. The best quality natural bristle brushes may then be conditioned by soaking in linseed oil for a few hours. Remove excess oil with kitchen paper before use.

How to Store Paint Brushes

If you are taking a short break from painting, leave your brush with its bristles in the paint. Ideally, use a special paint bucket with magnetic sides to which you can clamp the metal part of the brush, so that one-third of the depth of the bristles is immersed in paint. Alternatively, wrap the bristles in Clingfilm. To store brushes overnight, suspend them in a jar half-filled with solvent using a binder clip or masking tape. When the job is finished, clean thoroughly and store carefully following the instructions below.

Rollers

How to Prepare a New Roller Cover

The best roller covers or sleeves are made from a wool and synthetic mix. Ragged edges may leave bumps and streaks in the paint finish, so trim carefully with small scissors. Remove any fuzz and loose hairs with a self-adhesive lint remover. When painting, use a 5-litre bucket with a bucket screen hung over the edge. It holds more paint than a roller tray, is safer and easier to carry around, and can simply be covered up with a damp cloth when you take a break from painting.
