Quick and easy fall foliage drawing

If you choose to paint the canvas after you make your pumpkin, having a thicker edge makes it easier to paint the background. You have that edge of dried mud to stop you and keep it neat. When you have coated the entire pumpkin, you can take any object and pull it through the Dixie Belle Paint Company’s Mud to create lines and more texture on your piece.

Plus, for little learners, drawing worksheets for kids can help build important fine motor skills like proper pencil grip and pre-writing. Fine motor skills help early learners develop the strong finger muscles they’ll need for handwriting later.

Fall leaves drawing is a seasonal activity you can use to help your kids build these skills while having fun. I’ve included 5 different drawing worksheets for kids to use at home or in the classroom this Fall. Each leaf will help your little learners practice different pencil strokes while getting creative this Fall.

Leaf Grid: A Fall Drawing Idea

A leaf grid is a fall drawing idea that can help kids get familiar with art concepts like composition and balance. After learning how to draw leaves with my Fall leaves drawing worksheets for kids, encourage your kids to get creative by creating their very own leaf grids.

First, have them divide the paper into four squares by folding or using a ruler. Then, kids can draw a different leaf in each square on their paper. Color or paint fall leaves drawings for a creative and colorful fall art activity.

This hands-on fall drawing idea is a great way to introduce your little learners to a variety of mixed media techniques. Have your little learners use a different medium or material for each leaf. Try watercolors, oil pastels, or even paint sticks.

Seasonal Art Appreciation

While you’re studying famous artists, take some time to study art appreciation. Kids can learn a lot by studying fine art as well as expressing themselves with these Fall leaves drawing worksheets for kids.

Developing art appreciation helps kids to think outside the box and see the world from different viewpoints. It’s a great stepping stone for teaching your children about tolerance and empathy.

You can use seasonal art to explore different art periods, techniques, and artists. Before your little learners make their own Fall drawings, check out these fall leaves drawings from the masters:

  • Autumn on the Seine by Claude Monet
  • The Garden of Saint Paul’s Hospital by Vincent VanGogh
  • Autumn by Helmer Osslund

Painted Pumpkin Canvas with Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint

I was thinking about different ways to add some autumn vibes to my house. Kirklands had a cute white pumpkin and the background was the color of pumpkin pie. I thought this would be fun to recreate using a different color. It turns out that it was such an easy fall craft idea that I wanted to do a blog post and share it with you.

The first step in creating this fall-themed project was to find a pumpkin shape that I liked. It’s that time of year when we are adding fall things to our homes and pumpkins are all around. I am sharing easy pumpkin drawing ideas for you to recreate. I will begin with lots of ideas for any skill level then share how to fill in the pumpkin with Dixie Belle Paint Company’s Mud and use some Silk Mineral paint the background to be finished. You could also think of other fall drawing ideas and add fall leaves, a maple leaf or even think about any other symbol of fall to add.

Begin with a piece of paper with a white background and draw your pumpkin shape. You can begin with a circle or an oval, depending on your preference. After you have an oval or circle, you can add a stem. You will want to have the bottom indented, sketch, erase, and draw again until you are happy with your shape. If you are not comfortable doing a free fall drawing, you could also print off a picture of a pumpkin from Canva or the internet. Either way, when you are done and have a shape you like, cut it out and then trace it onto your canvas.

HINT: If you do not have a new canvas, you can use an old one or one from the thrift store. Just make sure to paint it white first to start with a clean slate.

STEP TWO – CUT OUT AND TRACE

Once you are done with your drawing and you cut it out and traced it onto your canvas using your pencil, it’s time to add any other fall items. If you want to add any small details like leaves or vines, you can add them now. Again, they can be printed or sketched by hand. If you don’t love freehanding, you can use Dixie Belle Paint’s Mylar Stencils for mistake-proof designs. You could add fat pumpkins and tall pumpkins together.

Next, you need to decide where on the canvas to place your pumpkin. I placed my pumpkin to the right on my canvas so I had more empty space on one side. This would allow me room if I wanted to add any type of autumn text to the sign.

The Fall Leaf Drawing Set-up

Set up a large sheet of drawing paper, scatter a few leaves around, and place freshly sharpened colored pencils on the table.

Invite your child to look closely at the leaves and notice the variety of colors and shapes, and then discuss what you see.

Some questions to ask:

  • What colors do you notice?
  • Do any of the colors surprise you?
  • How many points does this leaf have? Let’s count them together.
  • Which of these leaves could have come from the same tree?
  • Do you have a favorite leaf in this collection? What makes it your favorite?

Experiments in Drawing Fall Leaves

I sat across the table from my daughter and we drew leaves together. I always encourage my kids to experiment, and one way to do that is by modeling. As I colored my leaves in I layered one color on top of another. I noted that the red blended into green on one of the leaves, and tried to replicate that in my sketch.

My 4-year old payed attention to that and then pushed it one step further as she colored one of her leaves blue and purple, and gave another blue veins…because she liked the way it looked. Rock on! If you child goes for the unexpected, encourage him or her to go for it. The goal is to use the leaves as a starting point, and then layer that with interpretation and imagination.
