Spring is in the air which means it’s the perfect time to learn all about bugs and insects! We’ve been seeing all kinds of lively bees out in our yard and fairy garden busily pollinating, leading Theo to have all kinds of questions about bees (or ‘buzzle bees’ as he calls them). As a part of our learning we decided to make this bumble bee art project for kids! (This post contains affiliate links.)

Bumble Bee Art Project for Kids

  • 12 x 18 inch piece of thick, white paper (like this construction paper)
  • Scraps of white and black paper
  • Black pipe cleaners
  • Tempera paint in black and yellow (This is our favorite tempera paint.)
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Glue and/or tape

1. Start by painting black and yellow stripes across your large sheet of white paper with your tempera paint.

Theo loved that he was making a pattern and counted how many stripes we both made.

2. Once the paint dries, fold your paper in half horizontally to cut out your bee shape.

I drew a pencil line on the paper for Theo (age 3) to use as a guide for cutting, while Lucy (age 6) did it on her own.

3. Cut out two white circles for eyes. Color black dots in the center and glue them onto your bee. (I cut out the circles for Theo, and he drew the black circles in the center and glued them himself.)

4. Cut out a black stinger and glue it on your bee.

5. Take two pipe cleaners and round the tops to form antennae for your bee. Tape them in place.

6. You can even add some white wings if you want!

Our favourite punch needle kits for beginners

punch needle kit

We always love finding out what’s trending in the crafts world at Prima and our latest discovery is punch needle kits. We’ve become obsessed with punch needling or as some people refer to it, needle punching. A kind of embroidery that creates a textured design inspired by rug hooking, it’s easy to learn and therapeutic too.

Essentially you need similar tools as embroidery – the embroidery hoop, thread – in this case yarn – a needle and fabric. The fabric for punch needling is called ‘monks cloth’, it’s a loose even weave cotton made especially for punch needle crafts. Also the needle is much bigger than an embroidery needle as, rather than stitching the fabric, yarn is punched through the fabric which requires punch needle tools. The process is repeated until there is a pile on the top of the fabric which creates your 3D design.

You can find out more about the punch needling craft technique in our guide to everything you need to know about punch embroidery, do check it out before you give this craft a go. If you are trying it for the first time, you can’t go wrong with a punch needle kit.

You can of course buy punch needle tools alone but we’d recommend punch needle embroidery kits if you’re a beginner as they come with beautiful pre-made patterns that you can get started on straight away. In your craft kit you’ll also get step-by-step instructions helping you create beautiful punch needle art, though kits also include making projects like tote bags and cushions too.

From playful animal designs, perfect to be framed for a kid’s room, to pretty floral patterns and beautiful scenic wall hangings to display at home, here’s our pick of the best punch needle kits to try now.
