Physical Characteristics

Sea turtles are characterized by a large, streamlined shell and non-retractile head and limbs.

Depending on the species, sea turtles’ color range can be olive-green, yellow, greenish-brown, reddish-brown, or black in color. Some green turtles and hawksbills have shells patterned with streaks and blotches of brown or black. Leatherbacks have black carapaces (top shells) dotted with white and white plastrons (bottom shells) with dark splotches.

As its common name implies, the black subspecies (Chelonia m. agassizii) of green sea turtle is typically darker than C. m. mydas.

The green sea turtle gets its name from the color of its body fat (due to its diet of seagrasses and algae), not its shell.

Like many other aquatic animals, sea turtles are countershaded with a dark dorsal (back) and light ventral (lower surface) coloration. Countershading camouflages the turtles from potential predators. When viewed from above, the turtle’s dark back blends in with the ocean depths. From below, the lighter ventral side blends in with the brighter sea surface.

Flippers

Limbs are flippers adapted for swimming. Sea turtles are awkward and vulnerable on land.

Unlike land turtles, a sea turtle cannot retract its limbs under its shell.

Forelimbs are long and paddle-like.

  • Long digits are fused throughout the flipper.
  • Only one or two claws are present on each fore flipper.
  • A sea turtle swims with powerful wing-like beats of its fore flippers.

Hind flippers serve as rudders, stabilizing and directing the animal as it swims. The hind flippers of some species are quite dexterous at digging nests in the sand.


Head

A sea turtle cannot retract its head under its shell as a land turtle can.

Sea turtles have large upper eyelids that protect their eyes.

Sea turtles do not have an external ear opening.

Like other turtles, sea turtles lack teeth. Jaw shape varies among species. Each species has a jaw shape adapted for its diet.

If your order has not been received within the time frame outlined below, you can contact us online or call us at 1-800-367-3047 for assistance. Be sure to have your email address and order number handy when contacting us.

For US orders shipped via Ground, please allow 6 to 10 business days from the time of order for processing and delivery.

For 2nd Day shipping (US only), please allow 2 to 4 business days from the time of order for processing and delivery. (Note that aerosol sprays will not be shipped via 2nd Day.)

Delivery of items offered in our online store is limited to an address in the United States including U.S. territories, Alaska, and Hawaii. Shipments cannot be delivered to PO Boxes.

Pricing:

Orders totalling over $100 that are being shipped to the US will have the option for free UPS ground shipping (excluding Puerto Rico, Alaska, and Hawaii and orders containing digital products, MDF boards, brush sets & canvases).

Items purchased will be charged at the sales price indicated at the time of purchase. Prices are continuously updated and are subject to change. Past orders will not be updated to reflect later prices. Pricing is always in US dollars.

Returns:

Return Requirements

  • Products must be returned to DecoArt within 60 days of receipt.
  • Product must be returned in original condition and bottle/package.
  • Customer is responsible for return shipping costs. Social Artworking will pay for shipping costs if the return is a result of our error.

Initializing a Return

If you have an account and purchased an item from the Social Artworking website:

  1. Sign into your store account.
  2. Access the Order tab, click on the order, locate the item you wish to return and hit “Return Item” button
  3. Complete the Return Items form and click Submit.
  4. After completing the request, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your request. Simultaneously, a notification email is delivered to the email address specified in your Store Profile Settings with updated status of your request.
  5. Someone from our DecoArt team will respond to your request by the next business day. We may request additional information, such as batch codes, product photos, etc. to properly service your request.
  6. If a product needs to be returned, someone on our DecoArt team will instruct you on the return process.
  7. You will receive an email notification every time the return status changes.

If You have not set up an account, or you purchased from an authorized retail store please email your return request to [email protected].

To better assist you in resolving your request in a timely manner, please include the following information:

  • Purchase location (Retail store, eCommerce site, etc)
  • Order Number (if applicable)
  • Product name, Part number, (generally located above the UPC code) and quantity.

Once the request is received, someone from the Social Artworking team will contact you by the next business day.
