How To Paint Animals: Painting By Numbers Tips & Tricks

how to paint animals with numbers

Painting animals is about capturing life. Inquisitive eyes, glossy fur, swishing tails; it can all be captured beautifully in paint if you know how, especially with a little numerical help. If you’re struggling to learn how to paint animals then painting by numbers is the friend you never knew you had, and we’re here to help you get started. Let’s start by first dispelling three common myths about painting by numbers:

It’s for kids – Absolutely not. Painting by numbers kits do exist for kids, but there’s a huge range of more complex masterpieces especially for adults to enjoy, and painting by numbers is a highly popular adults’ art discipline.

It’s just big blocks of colour – Far from it. While simpler designs with larger shapes do exist, most animal paint by numbers kits and other designs give much greater detail and allow you to create masterpieces that look just like they were painted freehand.

It’s cheating! – Good gracious, no! Painting by numbers still takes discipline, practice and skill to achieve the best results; you can’t just breeze through it.

Animal Paint By Numbers

Capturing living creatures in paint can be tricky, particularly when it comes to faces and body proportions. Mastering the texture of fur, feathers and hair is also tough for anyone relatively new to painting. If these are your biggest challenges then you’ve come to the right place; animal paint by numbers helps you gradually learn how to master all of these effects and finetune your technique until you’re ready to graduate to freehand animal painting.

Get your kit

First thing’s first, you’ll need to pick your animal paint by numbers kit. Paint by numbers animals projects come in all sizes from small boards to extra large, with a huge range of domestic and wild animal designs to choose from. Pick your favourite design and familiarise yourself with everything in the kit. Most painting by numbers kits come with paint brushes, the art board and all the paints required, so all you’ll need is some water and something to protect your clothing and surfaces.

Extra Tip: Make sure your work area is brightly lit from multiple angles to minimise shadows and eye strain. A magnifying glass is also very handy for painting the really tiny bits.

Paint the largest areas first

Some advice recommends starting with the smallest areas first, but starting with the larger has one key benefit; you won’t have to spend quite so much time washing brushes between colours.

Work from top to bottom

This is important to minimise the risk of smudging your work as you go along, and the methodical direction also helps make sure you don’t miss any numbers.

Go from dark to light, or vice versa

Don’t feel like you have to work in numerical order. Try working instead from the darkest colours to the lightest colours, or the other way around. This will force you to consider the colours themselves and how they work together, how they layer up and how they interact – an important skill in freehand painting.

Use toothpicks

Toothpicks are nifty little tools for animal painting by numbers. For starters they’re very useful for mixing and blending your paint colours, but more than that they are great for adding detail. The fine points make filling very tiny areas much easier and more controlled than even the finest brush, and they’re ideal for creating fine line detailing like fur, hair or whiskers.

Break the rules

The best way to learn how to paint animals is to experiment. Just because the numbers or instructions don’t tell you to do something doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Play around with layering and blending colours, shadows, highlights and tones to add extra depth and custom detail to your paint by numbers animals. That way, the piece of art you come out with will be unique and truly yours.

Setting up

All you need is a flat surface. If you have an easel and prefer to paint using one then that is great. However, all you need is a flat surface and I actually use a large piece of foam board but you could use cardboard or wood. I tape the canvas down using masking tape. The added bonus is that I can easily move it out of the way when I am not painting. Foam board is freely available at craft stores.
If your canvas has any wrinkles in it make sure you remove them before you start. Simply spray a light mist of water on it and iron on a low setting on the back of the canvas, NOTE: This is before you use any paint! At Winnie’s Picks, all canvases are rolled into a strong (and beautiful ) tube so you won’t have any wrinkled canvases here.
Find a location to paint where you have a good light. If necessary supplement the natural light with a good quality lamp, perhaps a daylight lamp. You may even like to use a lamp with a magnifier to help you see. It is all personal preference but you do need good light.
Get paper towels and a cup of water so that you can clean your brushes as you work. You do not want the paint to dry on your brush. It is best to clean them when you change to a new color but also when they get a bit too full of paint. How to clean your brush? Simply dip your brush into the glass of water, stir it around and then wipe it with the paper towel. Work along the bristles of the brush to keep them smooth.

Completing a paint by numbers

Starting your painting

  • Consider where your arm will lie. I am right-handed so I start at the top left of the picture and work down and right. This stops me from having to lean on areas that I have already painted. However, you may prefer to paint all one number first, from the middle out or from the top to the bottom.
  • It is best to paint light areas first and then dark ones. As you add the darker paints you can go slightly over the lighter areas to make a good finish.
  • Keep your picture of the painting and reference sheet to hand as you may want to check the colors as you go along.

Once you get started there are some great tips for getting the best results.

  • You should cover the area marked and go over the lines. This will ensure there is no gap between areas of the painting.
  • Do not overload your brush with paint. You want to be in control of where the paint goes.
  • Use enough paint to cover the lines and numbers. You can always do 2 coats on any area that needs it.
  • Use all your brushes. It really helps to get a good finish if you use the right-sized brush for the area you are painting.
  • When you need to paint very small areas or thin lines, load your brush with plenty of paint and then hold it loosely. This will help you to get a good line the first time. It can also help to hold your breath!

Care for your paints throughout your project and they will give you an excellent finish. Here are a couple of tips.

  • If your paint starts to get a bit thick then simply add some water or flow improver. I use a cocktail stick or toothpick to stir my paints. It is actually always a good idea to stir your paints when you start to use them anyway.
  • When you are not using the paints make sure that the lids are properly closed so that they do not dry up. When you close them there should be a satisfying click! I also recommend running your fingers around the pots to make sure they have fastened fully all the way around.

Finally, take your time. Painting by number should be enjoyable and relaxing and you really will achieve the best results if you slow down.

Do not get too worried about what your painting looks like close up. No one is ever going to study it like you are when you are painting. Remember your painting is designed to be enjoyed at a distance.

So, enjoy your paint by numbers kit, and remember that you can enter your finished painting into our competition by sending us a picture of your finished art to [email protected].

Numbers are missing on my Norwegian fjord cabin painting . This is my third paint by number. I did not have enough paint for my last project and I am concerned this will happen with this one. Help.

Winnie’s Picks replied:
Hi Suzanne, First of all, there should be more than enough paint to finish your painting. In case you do end up not having enough paint, just contact us through the contact page and we’ll gladly send a new paint set. Then, it’s pretty strange that numbers are missing on the Norwegian fjord cabin canvas because we double-check the numbers on all paint kits. That said, please send us a picture to [email protected] and we’ll help you out.

Looking forward to hearing from you! Regards, Gaétan for Winnie’s Picks

Suzanne Poirier September 2022

The paint that was in my set is dried out. I am confused by your answer if what to do. You state to “add a drop of water of a flow improver. What does that mean?

How do I obtain paint that is not dried up?
———
Winnie’s Picks replied:
Hi Terri,
Just add 2-3 drops of water (or flow improver), mix everything with a
toothpick, then close the paint pot and let it rest for a few hours. Repeat
the process a couple of times if the paint is still too thick. And you’ll
end up having a brand new paint set
Let me know if you have any other questions,
Gaétan
