JFA Purple Orange started late 2006 from the ashes of a disability service provider that had been around since 1878. We didn’t want to be another service provider. There were already plenty of those. We wanted to be a place where people in the disability community could get information, connect to us and to each other. This would help us learn what types of policies and practices can help ensure that people get a fair go of what life has to offer. And then we could go and talk to government about that.

How did we come up with the Purple Orange? We needed a brand mark so that people could recognise us and our work. The initials of our name, the Julia Farr Association, spell JFA, which kind of sounds like Jaffa, which made us think of an orange. So maybe we could use an orange. After all, fruit has been used in branding before.

An orange is known for its colour. What you see is what you get. But what if the orange wasn’t orange? We thought it would make people pause and take a deeper look. It’s the same with people living with disability. You need to look beyond what you think you see. The colour purple is linked to things like thinking and dignity. And we liked the sound of that. So the Purple Orange was born. And later, we changed our name to match. We are JFA Purple Orange.

We Acknowledge And Pay Our Respects To First Australians

We want to see a world where everyone is included, respected and gets a fair go in life. We can’t get there without acknowledging that our office sits on the land of the Kaurna people. Like people living with disability, we recognise that Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander people continue to experience inequality and division. We want them to know we are their allies. We believe their culture, history, diversity and deep connection to the land deserves our highest respect.

How can we create inclusive communities?

The only way our communities will become truely inclusive of people living with disability, is if they are involved in planning and decision making. Here is a great example of what that looks like.

“I acquired my disability at the age of 14, essentially overnight. I had to learn how to do absolutely everything again and work out how to navigate a largely inaccessible world.

I have spent the years following my diagnosis grieving the life I had and the life I thought I would have. I have fallen into very dark times, where my disability and the reality of my diagnosis has become too much, and suicide seemed my best option.

My story can be seen as one of sadness and bad luck, but I share it in the hope that people will come to see how something so seemingly negative can turn into something positive, how you can survive what you thought you couldn’t and to never give up hope.

I have been horse-mad since I was three and upon acquiring my disability, I had to learn how to ride again and retrain my horses without the use of leg aids.

I am incredibly lucky to have grown my team, which now includes three national-level competition horses. I am a dressage and show rider, competing at the highest level of able-bodied dressage at Equestrian Australia National level.

I have had the pleasure of competing all over Australia at multiple National Championships and Royal Shows and being consistently selected for state teams and squads since 2016. I have been a registered elite athlete with the University of South Australia since 2018.

My horses have given me purpose through the biggest challenge of my life. They saved me.”
