Craft and enjoy Christmas-themed paintings

The cool thing about creating Christmas ornaments with process art is that it allows you and your artists to focus on the experience rather than the final product. That means there’s no need for kids to stress over precision or complicated steps. Instead, process art allows them to enjoy the, ahem, process and create for the fun of it.

Ready to get started with these process art Christmas ornaments? Here are the supplies you need to have on hand.

  • Wooden ornaments
  • Assorted craft paints (We used traditional Christmas colors.)
  • Salad spinner with lid
  • Mod Podge
  • Old paint brush or sponge brush to use with Mod Podge
  • Ribbon, twine, or ornament hooks

Process Art Christmas Ornaments - Supplies needed

If you’re a little hesitant to use your salad spinner for a paint project, don’t sweat it. The craft paint comes out of all those nooks and crannies more easily than you might think.

Also, you don’t have to miss out on our Christmas-themed process art if you don’t have a salad spinner on hand. In fact, you could use the supplies mentioned above along with our Jackson Pollock drip painting project to achieve similar results.

Step 1 – Paint the first side.

Process Art Christmas Ornaments - Step 1, add paint.

Begin the project by placing your wooden ornament in the salad spinner basket and drizzling some paint onto the ornament. Then lock the salad spinner lid in place and spin for at least 30 seconds.
Open the salad spinner and repeat this process again after adding paint to the exposed spots on the first side of the ornament. Lock the lid in place and spin as desired. When you finish painting the first side, place it in a safe place to dry before moving on to the other side.

Step 2 – Flip and repeat.

Continue the painting process, color by color, on the unpainted side of the ornament. When you’ve achieved your desired coverage and design, place it in a safe place to dry completely.

Process Art Christmas Ornaments - Step 3, seal and prep for display.

When both sides of the ornament are completely dry, seal the ornaments by “painting” them with a layer of Mod Podge. Allow the sealant to dry and then add ribbon or ornament hook. After that, you’re ready to display and enjoy your process art Christmas ornaments.

Remember, we LOVE seeing your art! Don’t forget to share your completed ornaments with us by posting in the Masterpiece Society Facebook Group or by tagging us on Instagram.
