Step-by-step instructions for drawing a Christmas-inspired image

What’s your favorite drawing app? Did you follow along and draw with me?

How to Draw a Christmas Tree

In this session of draw and chat with me, we’re drawing a Christmas tree.

This is a beginner level drawing. So don’t be afraid if you don’t have a lot of experience.

Watch the video a few times to help you practice.

I’ve also added a free template that you can download and use. Scroll down to the bottom of the post to get it.

To use the template, just download it and import it into Inkscape.

Create a layer for the template, then lock it. Now create a second drawing layer just above the template layer.

How to Use Basic Shapes to Draw

This simple technique uses basic shapes.

When I say basic shapes, I mean circles, rectangles and stars.

You can get pretty fancy and detailed with Inkscape, but like I said, this is a simple drawing that’s perfect if you’re just getting started.

I’m using a digital drawing tablet from Huion. You can use any tablet that you like. You can draw this with an iPad if you prefer.

iPad apps like Affinity Designer or Adobe Fresco are both great options to draw with vectors.

If you’re looking for drawing lessons, then this is a good place to start.

From bunnies, to dogs, flowers and butterflies, you can find a whole collection of drawing tutorials to choose from.

Sometimes it’s good to add details and words to your drawings. The text portion of the drawing gives it more of a pop. If you need more details on how to do that, head over to this post to see how to add text to your drawing.

  • “I love having a creative outlet and just do my crafting and Cricut for myself and family. I don’t have a whole lot of time but I love to do it when I can. To be honest, I just love learning!

I like to know how to do things so when the time comes, I don’t have to stress to find the answers.

Thank you so much for creative SVGs and taking the time to teach others. It is truly appreciated!!”

Producing braille pictures is very fulfilling and satisfying for both blind children and adults. It gives a real sense of accomplishment to create something artistic that can be shared with sighted family and friends. Creativity comes from within us all, not from our vision or lack thereof.

Download from a selection of braille drawings below, but for even more instructions and inspiration, check out Drawing with your Perkins Brailler. Our goal is to empower others to create pictures and share them with the larger blindness community.
