Canvas art ideas for Valentine’s Day

We’ve got a huge array of wall art options, but some of our top personalized Valentine’s Day gift ideas are:

DIY Valentine’s Day Kids Canvas Art

Arts and crafts time with our kids is very important. It opens the mind and gives bonding time between family. Holidays always call for fun projects. This Valentine’s Day Kids Canvas Art is simple but enjoyable for everyone.

In order to create this fun decor for the kids’ room or anywhere in the house to display, you simply need painters tape, blank canvases (we used 11x14in), washable kid’s paint (for easy clean up) and small paintbrushes.

Follow the directions below and let your kids get creative with this. You’ll find the colors turn out perfectly. Our daughter is so proud of her artwork, it now hangs above her bed.

How to Easily Remove Painter’s Tape from Canvas?

When removing the panter’s tape from the painted canvas, try using a warm washcloth to soak the tape for a minute. This should loosen the tape enough to easily remove it from the canvas.

Valentine’s Canvas Art

  • Painters Tape
  • Canvas
  • Washable Kid’s Paint (purples, pinks, reds for Valentine’s Day)
  • Small Paint Brush

Instructions:

  1. Starting with a blank canvas, tear the painter’s tape to create lettering/shapes. We used “LOVE” and a heart shape.
  2. Rub the painter’s tape to the canvas to protect from paint bubbling under it.
  3. Once you’ve created the wording or design you would like, place the canvas in an area to paint.
  4. Using purples, pinks and/or reds of washable paint, pour a small amount on the canvas.
  5. Use a small paintbrush (or fingers) and be creative. Mix colors spread around, have fun!
  6. Once everyone is happy with their artwork, let the canvas dry overnight.
  7. Once dry the following morning, carefully remove the painter’s tape from the canvas to reveal wording or design.
  8. Hang, display, and enjoy!

Valentine’s Gift: Heart Art Canvas

Heart Art Main Image

Hi, I’m Rachelle from Tinkerlab, where we celebrate children’s inventiveness through experiments and hands-on making.

If you’re like me, you might have a huge stack of child artwork that could easily be repurposed or given a fresh life. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, this is a fun way to upcycle a bit of your child’s artwork into a heart-filled gift for grandma, daddy, or, ahem, yourself. In our case, my daughter loved her canvas so very much that she’s decided to keep it for herself!

How to make a DIY Valentine Canvas from a Child’s Artwork

Supplies

  • Canvas
  • Child’s Artwork
  • Scissors
  • White PVA glue

Heart Art Painting

If you don’t already have a piece of art that’s ready to go, sit down for an art-making session. We filled a mini ice cube tray with liquid watercolors and had a lively painting session.

Heart Art Cutting Hearts

Once you have some dry art, cut your art into strips, fold the strips in half, and then cut small hearts from the paper. Our hearts are about 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide.

Make the hearts as big or small as you like. This could be a fun area to tinker with.

Heart Art Arranging Hearts

Arrange the hearts on the canvas until you find a composition that you really like. Don’t be afraid to cut more hearts or use a new piece of your child’s art if you’re not happy with the results at this stage.

Heart Art glue

Give each heart a good crease and then apply a line of PVA glue along the crease.

Heart Art on Canvas

Glue the hearts in place, and give them a firm press to help them stick well. Allow the whole thing to dry for a couple hours and then your art is ready to hang or share with a loved one.

Thanks so much for inviting me to share with you today!

Here are three more gift ideas that children can make themselves, and a little help from an adult.

A photo collage

A photo collage with a selection of your favorite photos is a great personalized Valentine’s Day gift idea. Are you giving a gift to your long-time partner, friend, or family member? If you have a large collection of images that you can piece together as a cohesive artwork, photo collages are a great gift option.

To make the most of your photo collage, choose images that have a similar filter. For instance, the images in the scene below all have a light, dreamy pastel filter, and most are taken at the beach. Create collections of images you want to use using platforms like Pinterest.

If you want to get creative, we even have “love” themed photo collages. Use one to commemorate this special day with your favorite images.

Short on photos? You could even book a professional photoshoot and gift this along with a voucher so you’ll have photos ready to upload.

A wall display

For the ultimate in personalized Valentine’s Day gift ideas, a large-scale wall display or a split canvas print are fantastic options for your loved one.

Wall displays usually consist of two or more separate prints that combine to create one overall piece. A wall display should be impactful, and make a lasting impression in the home.

Split canvases, on the other hand, simply consist of one large, impactful image which is split into separate canvases that are styled next to each other on your walls to create a single artwork.

The best wall displays should combine to tell a story. Use these tips below:

  • Use images from the same series, for example, wedding photos, family photos, or photos of your loved one and their pets
  • Add images that are edited in a similar way. For instance, don’t mix highly-saturated images with images that have dreamy, pastel hues, and avoid combining black and white images with colored images
  • Try to stick to a cohesive theme to anchor your display together, for instance, wedding images, or use the theme of a holiday you went on and mix up images of the location with couples shots
  • When creating a split canvas, check where the image splits. Ideally, you don’t want to split the image in the middle of a person’s face, or cut off an arm!
