VASE HANDBLOWN BY STEPHEN WILLIAMSON (SIGNED)

The history of the glass vase is very extensive, early examples have been found as far back as Mesopotamia more than 1,000BC, it was likely one of the earliest interior design accoutrements. We blow our vases at Bath Aqua glass using the techniques of the Ancient Roman glass blowers.

One of the first glass vases was made on a rod without a blow hole in it, they were made by wrapping a sandbag onto the rod and gathering the molten glass over it, It was a very basic glass vase which was uneven in the centre. They used colour and gold to create coloured glass vases. They soon developed the blowing iron we use today in our glass blowing studio in Bath, which enables the glass blower to use air to create a balloon of glass which he works, turning all the time. Reheating in the furnace keeping it turning, shaping constantly to create our beautiful range of glass vases.

We have several ranges of glass vases, we have the Roman range where we have Bath Aqua coloured vase, using copper oxide, iron, and Bath Spa minerals this is the signature colour of Bath as it reflects the colour in the Bath spa waters. The aqua coloured vases are available in many sizes, from the small to medium to large. All of the Roman range aqua coloured glass vases are adorned with the ‘serpantware’ or ‘snake thread-ware’, which was a symbol of wellbeing and health to the Ancient romans, it is still seen on pharmacy and hospital signs today.

Other ranges include our Ruby Glass vases which are blown with gold oxide and are good for ruby weddings, we offer an engraving service too. This makes a lovely ruby coloured vase to celebrate marriage, a perfect wedding gift We have a range of one off coloured glass vases in all sizes, occasionally made by an occasional guest glass blower. He is a master glass blower and specialises in large glass coloured vases. We have a fantastic range of Lustre glass vases which are made by adding lustre powder to an aqua glass base, this creates a metallic effect which is then brought to the surface by adding the right mix of gas, air and heat.

They create a shiny opulence effect, stunning if placed near a window. They reflect colours making this a uniquely coloured glass vase. Due to the nature of the lustre reaction, no two pieces will ever be identical. If more than one piece is bought from this range, we will do our best to match the final colour and design.

If you visit us in Bath we have demos all day long, every day except Sundays at 11:15am and 2:15pm, you can have a go at blowing a in a bauble. Be sure to book on holidays as we get very booked up. If you purchase a glass vase you could come and watch it being blown.
