How To Turn Your Favourite Photo Into A Beautiful Canvas Print

Photographic Wall Art

Although digital photography is becoming the norm nowadays, the warm fuzzy feeling when touching a printed photo from their childhood still lingers. We all know that those photo albums are now a thing of the past, but people still love to surround themselves with fond memories.

People print their favourite photos on glossy paper and hang them on their walls. These framed photos remind us of fond moments spent with loved ones.

But what if we told you there was a way to preserve your favourite photo? This is so that it has a higher depth, better quality, and texture that you can’t achieve on paper? To ensure photographs last longer, print them on a canvas .

And the good thing is that you don’t need to be a skilled photographer to turn your favourite photo into a canvas! The highest-quality mobile phones can take professional-looking photos if you put in some extra effort.

In this article, we will show you how to convert any photo into a canvas print and make your living space attractive.

  1. CHOOSE A HIGH-QUALITY PICTURE

The first and foremost step is to choose a high-quality image for printing. The broader the resolution, the better the print on the canvas. Such pictures are also easy to edit and resize. We recommend images with at least 300 pixels per square inch for a sharp and clear look.

The picture you select for the canvas print can be of any category. Family photos, pictures of pets, landscapes, and even motivational quotes can add charm to any space. You can take minimalistic popping pictures that highlight one character/object, or go for more intricate photographs featuring abstract details.

Besides this, you also need to select a suitable picture for each room. For instance, a canvas print of 18th-century Roman architecture won’t look suitable in your 8-year-old daughter’s room.

THE TROUBLE WITH AT-HOME CANVAS TRANSFERS

A canvas transfer involves literally removing the ink from the paper poster or print, and placing it on canvas. This is different from dry mounting a paper print onto a rigid background, as in this case the paper is left behind.

You may have seen a YouTube video explaining how to transfer photo or matte print images onto wood panels or canvas. The method involves spreading a gel medium on the surface of the canvas, then placing the photo face down and allowing it to dry. Once dry, the paper backing (now on top of the canvas) is dampened and rubbed away, leaving the photo adhered to the canvas.

While this is a great way to easily and inexpensively make your own canvas print, there is one problem with this method. Because the image is placed face-down on the canvas, the final result will be a mirror image of the original print. If you were able to print your image yourself, you can simply print it mirrored so it ends up the correct way. But if you have an existing print, this is not a possibility.

TRADITIONAL CANVAS TRANSFERS

The traditional transfer method we use removes this mirrored image concern. Rather than applying a substance to the canvas, we apply a non-reflective, UV-protective film to the front of your paper print or poster. Following a special chemical process, the film is removed, taking the ink from your poster along with it.

This super-thin film version of your print is adhered to thick, 7oz artists canvas using heat. Once cooled, the transfer is securely in place on the canvas, and will likely last longer than the paper print would have!

READY-TO-HANG CANVAS

If you choose to have your canvas transfer stretched, we can do this for you as well. We offer seven different stretcher bar depths: 3/4″, 1-1/2″, 2″, 2-1/2″ and 3″ plus rolled option. The canvas will be stretched tightly around the stretcher bar frame, with all fasteners applied to the back so nothing is visible from the sides.

The edges can be taped with white or black cloth tape, or you may choose to have the edges of your image wrapped around the frame (this is recommended only if there is at least 2″ of blank space on each side of the image).

Once stretched, your canvas print will be finished with cloth tape around the back, and bumpers in the bottom corners. Hooks and wire will be attached as well. When you receive your canvas, it will be all ready to hang on your wall!

A traditional canvas transfer uses an existing physical print, and then chemically lifts the ink off of its paper backing with a special film or laminate. The ink is then transferred onto a canvas, and fixed in place with a hot press.

To determine which method best suits your needs, consider the following factors.

Giclée On Canvas VS Traditional Canvas Transfer

Giclée On Canvas Canvas Transfer
Color Since the inkjet method begins with a digital file of the image, you can exercise a degree of control over color adjustment by using image-editing software, either to color-match the digital image to the original, or to manipulate the colors to achieve the desired result (e.g. changing an original color photo to black and white; enhancing the blue tones in an image to create a cooling effect, etc). With a canvas transfer, the color appearing on the resulting print is comprised of the amount of ink lifted from the original print, usually by a heat press, and transferred onto the canvas substrate. The degree of control over color adjustment you have with inkjet printing is not available with canvas transfers.
Archivability Our archival, pigmented inks from our inkjet printer are extremely durable, UV- and fade-resistant, and water-fast. Using these inks, your image is printed on a heavyweight, water-resistant, acid-free canvas. The coating then applied to the canvas finishes it with additional UV buffers. Your print is well protected and made to last. The UV barrier and water-resistant finishing applied to the canvas protects the print, although the durability of the color is dependent upon the quality of the ink lifted from the original print.
Size With a digital image file, you can choose the size of your giclee prints, whether you’d like to print them the same size as, smaller than, or larger than the original. The transferred print must be the same size as the original print, as it is essentially the same physical image as the original.
Quantity Multiple copies of the same image can be printed from the same digital file. Limited to one transfer for a single original print.
Side-bars We offer a variety of side-bar solutions, allowing you to choose what your artwork looks like from the sides that are folded around the wooden frame. You can select a solid color or a visual effect, using the image as a guide. Effects can be viewed on our Side-bar/Edges page. Black or White fabric tape is often used to finish the sides.
Price High-quality machinery and equipment can be used in both methods, and as both processes take a certain amount of time and labour, the price for inkjet printing on canvas and canvas transfers work out to roughly the same.
Copyright Permission from copyright owners is needed to create prints using either method. It is possible that, for example, an artist will allow their poster artwork to be transferred onto a single canvas. Other artists may not allow this. It is necessary to obtain permission for transfers and reproductions from the copyright owner in order to respect copyright laws.

Q2 : How long will my canvas transfer last?
The film placed over your print in order to transfer it is durable, with UV-blocking capabilities and protection against scratches, dust, and finger prints. If properly cared for – with regular dusting, hanging out of direct sunlight, etc. – your canvas transfer print should last for decades.

Q3 : How long will my canvas transfer take?
Once we have received your print, the canvas transfer process will take 4 to 6 days. The return shipping will take 2 to 7 days, depending on your location.
