Fine, good for the price.

I usually don’t buy pre-primed canvas, I gesso my own. I wanted to save some time so I got these. I did notice cracking of the gesso at the edges of the canvas. Doesn’t effect the front but still a little bothersome. Hopefully once I apply a thick varnish the cracks will be filled at bit.

Before we dive into the process of using gesso on canvas, it’s important to understand what gesso is. Gesso is a primer that is applied to a canvas before painting. It is typically made from a mixture of glue, chalk, and pigment. The purpose of gesso is to create a smooth and even surface for the paint to adhere to. Here are the steps to using gesso on canvas:

Step 1: Prepare your materials

Before you start applying gesso to your canvas, make sure you have all the necessary materials. You will need gesso, a canvas, a brush, and a palette knife. You may also want to have some sandpaper on hand to sand down any rough spots on the canvas.

Step 2: Apply the first coat of gesso

Start by applying a thin layer of gesso to the canvas using a brush. Make sure to cover the entire surface of the canvas, including the edges. You want the gesso to be evenly distributed. Allow the first coat to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Sand the canvas

After the first coat of gesso has dried, use sandpaper to lightly sand the surface of the canvas. This will help to smooth out any rough spots or bumps. Be gentle when sanding the canvas, as you don’t want to damage the surface.

Step 4: Apply the second coat of gesso

Once you have sanded the canvas, apply a second coat of gesso using a palette knife. This coat should be thicker than the first coat. Make sure to apply the gesso evenly and cover the entire surface of the canvas. Allow the second coat to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 5: Sand the canvas again

After the second coat of gesso has dried, use sandpaper to lightly sand the surface of the canvas again. This will help to create a smooth and even surface for painting.

Step 6: Apply additional coats of gesso if necessary

If you find that the surface of your canvas is still rough or uneven, you may need to apply additional coats of gesso. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you achieve the desired surface texture.

Step 7: Start painting

Once the gesso has dried completely and you are happy with the surface texture, you can start painting on your canvas. The gesso will help to prevent the paint from seeping into the fibers of the canvas and will create a smooth and even surface for your artwork.
