Attempts To Make Black Colors Without Any Black Pigments: A Tutorial

Hey guys! I’m going to discuss my little experiment on how I managed to make black colors (or very dark colors) with some known color palettes. The color palettes I used in the experiment were: RYB palette, RYBG palette, CMY palette, Split Primary (RYBCMY) palette, and Secondary palette. I had some extra colors that I don’t use (such as Lemon yellow (Primary Yellow) and Primary Blue) so I was able to make a good CMY primary palette and a good Split Primary palette.

NOTE: I started with equal parts of colors for each palette, but the goal is to make a black that is very dark. So adding a little more blue to the RYB palette may help achieve a darker color.

With that, let’s get started!

Below are the palette colors grouped.

RYB: I mixed equal-parts Vermilion Hue, Cadmium Yellow Hue, and Ultramarine Blue at first, but noticed how it took on a brown tone. I proceeded to add a little more blue to the mix to achieve a “mid” black.

RYBG: I mixed equal parts Vermilion Hue, Cadmium Yellow Hue, Ultramarine Blue, and Permanent Green Light together. It took on a very dark color with a green tone to it.

CMY: I mixed equal parts Primary Blue, Primary Magenta, and Primary Yellow together, and it formed a brown. Since my goal was to create a black, I tried to add more of the cyan color, then a little more of yellow, and some magenta, but it didn’t yield a darker color. I see why CMY color sets are paired with a black now, because CMY on their own cannot yield a dark color.

Split Primary: I mixed equal parts Vermilion Hue, Cadmium Yellow Hue, Ultramarine Blue, Primary Blue, Primary Magenta, and Primary Yellow together, and it gave a dark brown, a brown darker than the result of the CMY mixture.

Secondary: I mixed the colors that I use for this palette: Cadmium Yellow Hue, Vermilion Hue, Primary (Quinacridone) Magenta, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Turquoise, and Permanent Green Light. Mixing these yielded a very dark color, similar to the mixture from RYB. It takes on a slightly warm tone.

Here are the results in masstone, wash, and in Titanium White tints:

RYB mixture takes on a cool wash and tint, and RYBG has a greenish wash and tint. CMY has a brown wash, and when titnted with T white, it looks like an “earthy” pink. The Split Primary Palette gave a muted dark brown wash, and it was muted even further with the T white tinting. Lastly, the Secondary palette gave a dark muted wash with a slight purple tone, and when tinted, produced a cool slightly bluish tone, almost like Ivory Black when tinted with T white.

If I were to rank the darkness of the products based off of the paper and not the photo, I would rank like this:

  1. Secondary Palette (Darkest)
  2. RYB Palette
  3. RYBG Palette
  4. Split Primary Palette
  5. CMY Palette (Lightest)

NOTE: The Secondary palette can produce a total of four blacks.

  1. Red Orange/Orange Red/Warm Red + Green Blue/Cool Blue = Cool Black
  2. Violet Red/Cool Red + Green = Warm Brown Black
  3. Yellow + Blue Violet/Warm Blue = Green Black
  4. All colors mixed together = Ivory Black Hue

wew, this was a lot of stuff, but I hope this isn’t too overwhelming! I hope this was very helpful for you guys, and I hope you can apply the stuff from this post someday! Thank you, and let me know if you have any questions!

Be safe, and good day to you all!

How to Easily Make Brown

The easiest way to make brown is by mixing orange and black. Be sure to not use too much black to start. Therefore, begin with a very small amount of black and as more until you get the shade you want.

To get a brown color is easy, but getting the correct shade you’re looking for can be more difficult. It also depends on what colors you have available. For example, do you only have primary colors or do you also have premixed colors? Do you have white and black? The different sections below can help you navigate to get you the correct color you’re looking for.

What Two Colors Make Brown?

Orange and Black. The amount of black you add will determine how dark it will be.

The color of orange will also affect the color you get. As you can see, using my handy pocket color wheel, you get two different browns depending on whether it’s orange or red orange ( click on them to make them larger ).

How do I Make Brown With Primary Colors?

To make brown with the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue), you need to mix them all together. However, not in equal amounts. My recommendation is to first make a yellow-green by adding a small amount of blue to yellow. Then gradually add red to make the desired color.

Another way , as shown on the color wheel, is to first make red-violet by mixing blue and red, and then add yellow to it. C lick on the images to make them larger.
