Art Classes for children 7 to 9 years old

This is a great age for Art Classes. The kids from 7 – 9 are not self-conscious yet about how their art work “should look.” They are very open to ideas and information. Learning how to draw and feeling confident about it will take them safely beyond the age where most of us decided “we do not know how to draw” or about 10 years old.

In this class, we have a good balance of drawing from imagination and drawing from observation. Drawing from imagination is very important at this age and teaching them a few art concepts that can be applied to their drawings will open their creativity and imagination. We teach drawing from observation and help students to “see” and notice details that will help them to translate it to paper.

We teach about painting in this class including the proper use of brushes, color mixing using watercolors and tempera paint and other mediums such as soft and oil pastels. This class builds confidence and individual creativity in a guided but fun artistic environment.

When can I enroll in a class? You can enroll anytime as long as we have space in the class. The tuition for the first month will be prorated based on your enrollment date.

What does the monthly tuition cover? The tuition covers FOUR art classes that meet once per week. There is a quarterly registration fee every September, December and March for child and teen classes. For adult classes, there is an annual registration fee.
Some homeschool classes are marked as bi-weekly and meet twice a month.

When do the classes end? During the school year we offer on going classes from September through the end of May. You can join any time. You can cancel and stop payments s by notifying us by the 15th of the month to avoid the next monthly charge. During the summer, we offer one-week summer camps and weekly classes in sets of 4 or 6 sessions.

What if I miss a class? If you need to miss a class, you can make up your missed class by attending another class as long as you are currently enrolled. You will need to contact us to schedule your make-up class. However, there is ABSOLUTELY NO PRORATING NOR REFUND for missed classes. “Missed” classes cannot be used as a “class credit” for the next session.

Are materials included? All materials are included for child and teen classes. Adults are responsible for their own materials.

Is there a cancellation fee? For Weekly Classes, September to May: There is not a cancellation fee, however to cancel a class and stop the monthly payments, please send an email to [email protected] no later than the 15th of the month to avoid the next month’s tuition charge. School of Art & Design

Art & Design 2022

In our Art & Design classes, young people learn how to develop ideas and reflect on the world around them. We offer programs across a wide range of visual and media arts–ensuring that students first develop a strong foundation before moving on to more advanced techniques, no matter the age at which a young person first encounters their artistic practice.

Our faculty bring professional-level instruction to every class across all Arts Umbrella locations. We offer a rich curriculum for students at every level, including mentorship for those seeking to expand their artistic practice. Experience-based learning is at the core of our program objectives. This means that as young people learn new skills and techniques, they will put them into practice in a way that develops their individual creativity. Student engagement—through classroom discussion, critique, and exhibition-making—helps children and youth develop real-world skills such as communication, confidence, and discipline.

Placement in our Sessional Art & Design programs is based on age, and with small class sizes and instructors and assistants in every studio, dedicated students will be able to make personal advancements within their chosen artistic discipline. Our faculty and Student Services team are also prepared to make recommendations for new programs to further develop and expand a young person’s artistic practice, whether they enjoy Drawing & Painting en plein air, sculpting in the pottery studio, or delving into new media in the Moffat Media Arts Hub.

Our Advanced Classes are designed for young people who want to push, inquire, and develop a more in-depth practice. For young people who demonstrate an interest in post-secondary study in the creative sector, our Scholarship Programs—developed alongside program partners—provide access to experts and professionals in industries such as architecture, animation, and contemporary art.
