Painting on glass vase using acrylic

Painted glass vases can be beautiful additions to any room in your home. They can also be delicate, and the paint may chip or peel over time if not properly cured. Here is a guide on how to paint a glass vase with acrylic paint, seal it, and cure it for durability.

Painting on acrylic board with glass effect

The innovative proposal of the ADM artists comes from the intuition of using modern materials and techniques to create an updated version of traditional paintings on glass, better known as paintings under glass. These are paintings made by using an ancient technique where the paint was applied to the back of the glass in order to enhance the luminosity and the brightness of colours and obtain an almost three-dimensional effect. One of the most significant expressions of this technique is that of the Naifs of the former Yugoslavia, dating back to the last century, in which the painting seems to come out of its place, generating very bright colour effects, impossible to achieve by applying paint to the front of the support. Our artists achieved the same 3D effect and gloss as those of paintings under glass by using Plexiglass and acrylic paint. The result is exciting in terms of visual impact and the painting is less fragile and less heavy respect to its original version.

Selecting the Right Glass Vase for Painting with Acrylics

When it comes to painting glass vases, there are a few things you need to consider before you begin. The first is the type of glass vase you are using. Thick or textured glass vases are not ideal for acrylic painting because the paint will not adhere well and will likely flake off. Instead, you should use a clear, smooth glass vase.

The second thing you need to consider is the size of the vase. If you are painting a large vase, you will need more paint than if you are painting a small vase. In addition, you will need to use a thicker paintbrush for a large vase to avoid streaks.

Once you have selected the right glass vase, the next step is to choose the right paint. Acrylic paint is the best type of paint to use for painting glass vases because it dries quickly and is easy to clean up.

To begin painting your glass vase, start by sketching out your design on the vase with a pencil. Once you are happy with your design, start painting it in with acrylic paint. Be sure to use bright and vibrant colors to really make your vase stand out.

Once your design is finished, allow the paint to dry completely. Once it is dry, you can seal it with a clear sealant to help protect it from fading and scratches.

Preparing the Glass Surface for Painting

Painting glass vases with acrylic paint is a fun and easy way to brighten up any room in your home. However, before you can start painting, you need to prepare the glass surface for painting. Here is a guide on how to do that.

1. Clean the glass surface of the vase with soap and water. Be sure to remove all dirt and dust from the surface.

2. Dry the glass surface of the vase with a paper towel.

3. Apply a coat of primer to the glass surface. This will help the paint adhere to the glass better.

4. Let the primer dry completely.

5. Paint the glass surface of the vase with the desired color of acrylic paint.

6. Let the paint dry completely.

7. Apply a coat of sealer to the painted glass surface. This will help protect the paint from fading and chipping.

8. Let the sealer dry completely.

Now your glass vase is ready to be displayed in your home!

Choosing the Appropriate Acrylic Paints and Brushes for Glass

Glass vases are a popular item to paint because they come in a variety of shapes and colors. You can use acrylic paints to create a design on a glass vase, or you can paint the entire vase a solid color.

When choosing acrylic paints for glass, you need to consider the type of glass that the vase is made from. If the vase is made from regular glass, you can use any type of acrylic paint. If the vase is made from a type of glass that is not porous, such as tempered glass, you need to use acrylic paints that are specifically designed for non-porous surfaces.

When choosing brushes for painting glass, you need to consider the type of acrylic paint that you are using. If you are using acrylic paint that is designed for regular glass, you can use any type of brush. If you are using acrylic paint that is designed for non-porous surfaces, you need to use a brush that is specifically designed for use with that type of paint.

So follow along for a step-by-step DIY guide on how to Paint a Vase with Acrylic Paint.

  • Vase (Any glass or ceramic kind will work)

Time to DIY

Step 1. Select your Vase

First things first, find the style of vase that you want. If you don’t have any vases handy, head to your local thrift store or dollar store and try spending a couple dollars. There’s usually an abundance of vases available in all different patterns, shapes, and sizes for as little as $1. And don’t be shy about the price because I promise you that once you are done, no one will know you bought a Dollar Tree vase. Besides, dollar store vases are great for this type of DIY project – not to mention, vases make some of the best Home Decor Items to purchase used.

Step 2. Clean the Vase

The next step is to clean the vase thoroughly by wiping it down or washing it, then patting it completely dry. Remove any and all tags or stickers. You want a clean surface to work with to ensure the paint sticks.

Step 2 – Mix the Ingredients

Start by adding the acrylic paint to the container. I eyeballed it and squeezed the desired amount, but one cup of paint is fine. Then add two tablespoons of baking powder to your desired acrylic paint for every cup of paint in a container. Mix the contents together (using a craft stick) until it has been evenly distributed. You can add more baking powder to the container if you prefer thicker paint results. I played around with several acrylic paint colors mixing a darker color with a lighter color. I used the white paint in some instances to tone down the color I created. Because terracotta is a complex color with brown undertones, it may take some mixing before you get the shade you want.

Step 3. Apply the Mix

Apply the first coat of paint mix to the outside of the entire vase using a small paintbrush. Pay attention to your brush strokes and paint in one direction as the brush may leave behind some brush marks and streaks. Don’t forget to cover and paint the bottom of the vase, as this part can sometimes get easily missed. Try adding a little bit of paint on the inside of the vase to create cohesiveness. Excess drips may happen, so if the paint drips, just clean it up with the rag.

Step 4. Let it Dry

The drying time should take anywhere from 1-2 hours to complete for the first coat. Give it the time it needs to dry completely.

Step 5. Paint a Second Coat

Two coats of paint should suffice, but a third paint coat is appropriate if you want more texture. The number of coats will depend on the look and finish you are going for. Then let it dry overnight for best results.

Acrylic painted vases that look like terracotta

And there you have it – modern-looking terracotta painted vase. What a work of art!? And no baking method is required. It is important to note that this process can also be done on any bottle (including wine bottles), glass jars, or plant pots. However, I used a combination of plain glass vases to DIY and an old dated ceramic vase. These new DIYed ceramic-looking glass items are also great for Styling your Bookshelves.

Don’t have Baking Powder?

If you don’t have baking powder, you can substitute it with baking soda. Baking soda will provide very similar results as baking powder. While you won’t notice a huge difference between the two, I used the baking powder because it is thicker and provides a more realistic ceramic appearance. However, the choice is yours to make.

So, what are you waiting for? Try out this project with the girls or guys on paint night at your house – they will love the art lesson. Glass painting and upcycling can be lots of fun.

Other ways to upcycle your vase using different techniques

There are a couple of other ways that you can DIY your vase.

Spray Paint

Another quick, easy, and budget-friendly way is to spray paint the outside of the vase. You can find spray paint at any local home improvement store or craft store such as Hobby Lobby. A matte or chalky finish color would be ideal as it is an easy way to get a more modern trendy look. You could even go for a two-tone vibe by using painter’s tape to cover part of the vase and simply spray paint the uncovered half to create the two-tone.

Wrap it with Twine

I love twine, and twine is a very crafty material. You can get twine for $1 from the Dollar Store. You can wrap any jar or vase with twine and attach the twine using glue. Super easy and quick. This is a great way to create a shabby chic farmhouse decor.

Metallic Craft Paper

Do you have any metallic craft paper or craft paper with a floral pattern? Of course, you do. You can use a piece of craft paper (different colors are fine as well) and wrap it around the vase and glue it down. That’s it. Simple
