Recycling options for old canvas paintings

How do you reuse them with oils without breaking the fat over lean rule? When I first started oil painting I did like first layer mineral spirits, second layer half oil half mineral spirits, third layer oil only as a medium. So my last layer was very fat and I used quite a lot of medium to oil ratio. Can I recycle those for oil paintings?

Use the backside of them instead. Note, I personally wouldn’t do it, as I sell my paintings. But if I just wanted a quick study, to trash later, I’d just paint on the back. You can also spend a lot of time sanding them down and prepare them for oils again, but for every hour I waste doing that, is an hour not painting.

I have alot of canvases which I have started paintings in oil but never finished….I get bored FAST!! I want to re-purpose these canvases, but I want to be able to use other mediums too. How can I prep these canvases for new paintings for possibly other mediums? There has to be a way!

There are ways, but the canvas should be a good candidate for painting over and that pretty much means the desired texture of the surface. Smooth can always work fine, but if you want to remove much impasto and rough texture, or if the canvas is a cheapo, then it is not worth it, start with another new canvas.
Do you mean you want to use other oil mediums, or do you mean you want to use acrylics, etc.?
You can just sand it a bit, couch it, and start painting or reprime with some oil paint if you want to cover the old image. I recommend repriming with an opaque titanium white oil paint (you can tone this layer also) to even it up and to help block the previous image from ever showing through. If you do any sanding, add a little water or OMS to reduce generation of dust, sand it outside, and wear a respirator/mask.

How do you reuse them with oils without breaking the fat over lean rule?

If the painting is older, doesn’t have thick paint, and is good and dry, fat over lean isn’t an issue to worry about, it is similar to any oil ground if it is well dried and stable.

The once deemed “unrecyclable” can become recyclable with the help of Waster! We offer you services to recycle your canvas paintings and other art supplies through the use of TerraCycle boxes. I will discuss further below in the following sections.

Generally, you will find it hard – if not entirely impossible – to find a recycling facility that accepts these types of wastes. That is because many of the materials are made up of different combined materials, making it extremely “unrecyclable” by their standards.

As a result, they usually end up in landfills or cluttered in various places. Of course, no one wants that to happen. Fortunately, TerraCycle takes these types of wastes. They are the first alternative option to think of when trying to recycle “unrecyclable” products.
