Step-by-step guide to drawing a gingerbread house

I used a red Sharpie to create candy canes to use as trim for the windows and door.

How to Draw a Gingerbread House

The first thing you will do is draw out the shape of a simple rounded house. Draw the pitched roof, then draw the circle for the lollipop.

Step 2.

Begin drawing the roof in better detail. The icing drips down the ends of the roof just like icicles would when snow and rain freezes. Add some of the candy to the roof.

Next up, draw in the chimney like so, then draw an overhand around the rim of the stack. When that is done I chose to add some candy canes shooting from the stack. Add more small round candies like so.

Step 4.

Now the decorating begins on the roof. Add some Skittles or gum drops in rows on your roof, then when that is done draw a circular shape for the wreath or window.

Next, sketch out the thick column like edges for the house’s structure, then when you are done you can move to step six.

Gingerbread houses

  • Since you will be using melted sugar you will not have the problem of having to use different things to keep the structure fixed while the glue dries. Instead you can just hold the pieces together by hand for a few seconds. Just be very careful since melted sugar is very hot and you could sustain a serious burn if you spill it on your skin. You might want to keep the kids away for this step.
  • Start by dipping the bottom edge of the back of the house in the sugar and place it at the back of your base (or where you want the house to be). If your base is very tight or if you are worried the house will not fit, then mark out in advance where the back piece should be placed.
  • Continue with the piece next to the back piece and dip the bottom end as well as the side that should attach to the back side. You can also use a brush to apply the sugar. Keep going piece by piece.
  • In case you notice that you need some adjustments after it has glued together then you are in a sticky spot.. What you can do is to use a dremel.

Some additional tips

  • If you are not going to eat it and if it is a bigger structure you are making: Make a slightly smaller foam board version of the house and glue the gingerbread on it.

  • Make trees: ice cream cone covered in royal icing then roll it in shredded coconut that has been coated with green food coloring

We hope that you now know how to build a gingerbread house!

And while working on your gingerbread house, why don’t you serve yourself a glass of Swedish “glögg” (mulled wine), see our traditional recipe here

Merry Christmas all! I woke early this morning (3:00 AM D;), so I got on Instructables for a new project! I finished this gingerbread house at 5:00 AM! Passed the time, that’s for sure!
