    How to Paint Sunflowers

Sunflowers are one of my favorite things to paint because they are so bright and happy. And sometimes we just need to focus on the positive and the happy future that we have ahead of us. I talk about that more in the video below.

    2. Add the Colors

Now that the outline is down, we can get to the fun part, which is filling everything in!! You can start wherever you want and fill your painted outline in.

You can also use whatever colors that you like. I went for the classic yellow flower and green leaves and stem with a brown center. But you can add more detail by adding more colors or just keep it simple.

Great contrasting colors would be orange, black, and red hues!

This is also when you will want to add in the background if you want a background. I kept it simple with a sunset and some added greenery and flowers.

If you wanted to, you could paint a whole field of sunflowers! Or some beautifully green rolling hills in the background.

    3. Add Details

Next, you will want to add the details to bring this painting to life. If you want to know how to paint sunflowers one important part is adding the little details.

These will be the added texture to the center of the flowers as well as color variations and highlights. This will help your flowers come to life and look more realistic.

This is really simple and really just comes down to a few brushstrokes of different colors to add depth to your painting.

    • Medium sized round rock, about 2” across
    • Pencil
    • Americana Multi-Surface Satin Paint in Canary, Orange Sherbet, Coffee Bean, Cotton Ball
    • Fine paint brush
    • Paint pen in black

How to Paint a Sunflower on Rocks

Draw an outline of the sunflower onto the rock with a pencil. Start by drawing a large circle in the center. Then, draw the individual petals, ensuring the shapes are wider at the base and taper to a point at the tips.

Mix 3 parts Canary with 1 part Cotton Ball. Paint petals over the first petals. Let dry and then paint a second coat of the same mixture. Let dry.

Draw an additional layer of petals in between the painted petals.

Paint the second layer of petals using Canary. Let dry and then paint a second coat in Canary for additional coverage.

Mix equal parts Canary with Orange Sherbet. Using a wet paint brush, lightly brush over the middle round of painted petals. Add a few short strokes at the base of each petal tapering to less at the tips.

Paint the center circle of the flower in Coffee Bean. Let dry.

Mix equal parts Coffee Bean and Orange Sherbet. Using a wet paint, dab unevenly throughout the circle. Let dry.

Using a wet paint brush, dab unevenly throughout the circle using Orange Sherbet. Let dry.

Using a dry paintbrush, dab a few additional spots of Orange Sherbet just in the center.

Lastly, to finish your sunflower painting, use a black paint pen to draw dots over the painted centers.

With a wet cloth, remove any of the pencil lines that are showing.

And that’s it, your sunflower painted rocks are complete! Make as many or as few as you’d like. They look really sweet styled as napkin weights for your summer picnics!

And if you don’t have rocks on hand for painting, you can use this same process for how to paint sunflowers on any surface. Wouldn’t they look gorgeous on a canvas or throw pillow?
