Acrylic medium for varnishing paintings

Hi Devon.
Good question. If you do a search of the forum, type in varnish, you will get many threads where varnishes have been discussed.
There are many acrylic mediums, some of which are varnishes. There are retarder mediums, impasto gel mediums, flow control mediums etc etc. Some of the mediums are also varnishes, and can be used during the painting process to control gloss, matt or satin effects. These varnishes are not removable, and are usually called something like a “varnish medium”. Acrylic varnishes are usually applied as the final coat, are permanent, and should be non-yellowing. Being acrylic, they can be overpainted if desired, or even used during the paintng process like a medium.
The final varnish is removeable turps or mineral based varnish, which may be called an acrylic varnish, but this should not be used during painting. It is a final layer only, and should not be overpainted. These types of varnish usually will say they are strippable varnishes.

Thanks Marty; I didn’t find a clear answer to the physical differences between acrylic matte medium and acrylic matte varnish so I have emailed Liquitex. I will post their reply if it satisfies my question.
Devon.

Hi Devon, Liquitex’s website is actually one of those where you can see how they define any difference between a medium and a varnish: if you look here you’ll see they offer a medium and varnish in addition to their actual final picture varnish, Soluvar. If you check the Online acrylic resources thread you’ll see some more links to their education section where you can read more about this sort of thing in The Acrylic Book (well worth having on the computer for reference) and The Varnished Truth. Golden’s website also covers this topic. A few years back the varnishes offered for acrylics were a type of medium, being water-thinned acrylic emulsions, although they were often of a different type to the ones intended for mixing with the paint. Now varnishes for acrylics are generally spirit-soluble (like Soluvar and MSA) as they can be removed from an acrylic paint surface with minimal risk to the paint. Einion

Einion; thanks for the info. I may be getting too technical but I am just curious what makes one polymer a varnish and one a medium.Maybe one is just a bit harder than the other? I am still waiting for Liquitex to reply. Devon.

I received a reply from Liquitex and am sharing it with anyone who is interested. My students often ask me what the difference is between the two products and now I have the answer.
Devon
“Our Matte Varnish and our Matte Medium have the same non-yellowing, flexible polymer base. The main difference is that the Matte Varnish is formulated to preserve paint film clarity, by using less matting agents in the formulation. Matte Medium can be applied as a final, non-removable top coat for acrylic paintings. Be aware, however, that the colors, especially darker values, will lose some visual intensity and clarity. Likewise, Matte Varnish may be mixed with the acrylic color, however, it will not reduce color sheen to the degree that Matte Medium will.”
