Acrylic Painting for Beginners – Mansfield Central Library – Adult Learning

In this course, you will be taught the foundations of working with acrylic paint and how they are the simplest and most effective way for an absolute beginner to learn how to paint successfully. The course covers setup and materials, colour mixing and pigment choice, brush-handling and palette-knife techniques, as well as mediums. You will complete a still-life painting and gain a solid foundation of painting knowledge.

You will learn how to use the acrylic paint and differences between other medias and acrylics. The course is aimed to give learners a good understanding of the processes by using examples and demonstrations, including topics such as:

  • Understanding the properties of the materials. How to select and use them
  • Prepare the painting surface
  • Make a’ stay-wet palette’ and how to layout a palette
  • Dilute the paint to the right consistency
  • Experiment with colour by mixing the paint on your surface and on palette
  • How to use varnish and to maintain your tools
  • Health and safety

Learners should bring:

  • 30 x 40 cm Stretched canvas/ Canvas board, acrylic paper/sketch pad, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, Titanium White acrylic paint, white acrylic gesso, palette, glycerin, spray bottle, a range of synthetic paint brushes, graphite pencils, metal palette knife, silicone spatula, baby wipes, cotton rags

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

Introduction to Painting with Acrylics

A structured course for those who have never painted before, as well as for those who want to reinforce their basic skills in working with acrylic paint. Students learn to see colour, shape and tone and relate all these elements together in various compositions. This course aims to foster self-confidence and enjoyment of painting in a stimulating environment.

Learn painting techniques, colour mixing, composition and application. We will work from still lives and photographs. We will also look at the work and techniques of well-known and contemporary artists to support development and provide inspiration.

This is an ideal course for beginners as there is plenty of guidance from the tutor.

What topics do we cover?

  • Lay out a basic palette
  • Working with a limited tonal palette
  • Handling paint
  • Laying down a tonal ground
  • Drawing out and under-painting
  • Using paint mediums
  • Understanding colour and mixing
  • Understanding composition
  • How to take a painting to completion

By the end of this course you will:

  • ​understand how to use acrylic paints
  • Be able to undertake a painting alone
  • Understand how to mix colours, and have a good understanding of colour theory
  • Have an understanding of tone, composition, handling paint, and more
  • Have a number of paintings to take home!

Amanda Jewell is a Devon based artist and experienced, qualified teacher who has taught art for many years to a range of people.

She paints vibrant, colourful, often semi-abstract paintings in a variety of media for exhibitions and as commissioned work.
