‘The Grinch’ continuity error exposed in viral TikTok

A TikTok video highlighting a minor continuity error in How The Grinch Stole Christmas has gone viral, irking audiences of over 400,000 people who have liked the hit video. Posted on December 13th, the video runs viewers through a scene in which the Grinch is causing chaos in Whoville, but actor Jim Carrey’s eyes shift from his natural brown to amber. “Every time I watch The Grinch,” says the video voice-over, “I notice this one little mistake they made whether they forgot to either put his contacts in or to edit them in afterwards. So just, Jim Carrey’s brown eyes are just there. And in the next scene, they’re back to that.”

One commentator claimed that the reason for the blunder could have been because Carrey was infamously difficult with the makeup department. He allegedly “loathed” the green body paint so much that he forced three-time Oscar nominee Kazuhiro Tsuji to quit the film. Filming was difficult for Carrey because not only was he encased for hours at a time in a head-to-toe fur suit, but he was wearing huge contacts that kept getting fake snow caught in them.

Tsuji told Variety that he also took his frustrations out on the crew. “Once we were on set, he was really mean to everybody and at the beginning of the production they couldn’t finish,” he said. “After two weeks we only could finish three days’ worth of shooting schedule, because suddenly he would just disappear and when he came back, everything was ripped apart. We couldn’t shoot anything.” But it got worse for Tsuji, who recalled a day in the makeup trailer when Carrey stood up, pointed at his chin and told the makeup artist the colour was different to the shade it was the day before. “I was using the same colour I used yesterday. He says, ‘Fix it.’ And OK, you know, I ‘fixed’ it. Every day was like that.” The prosthetic makeup artist later returned to the Christmas production on the condition that Carrey behaved himself on set and that the crew would help him secure a green card. Factual errors

When The Grinch sends out moths to destroy the stockings via flying to them and eating them up. This is a common thing in popular culture shown about moths. In reality, moths may eat fabrics as larvae, not in their adulthood.

When the Grinch was taking all the presents from the homes in Whoville he took Martha May’s ring off of the nightstand. Later she comes sliding down the sack of the presents stolen by the Grinch and hands the Mayor back his ring. She is sliding off the sack because she was retrieving the ring from the sack.

Noticeably, during the Grinch’s flashback when May-Who and the rest of the Grinch’s classmates, except Martha, burst out laughing at the Grinch’s predicament, even Miss Rue-Who, the teacher, is giggling along. In real life, if students are acting so mean-spirited to a certain student, the teacher would actually scold them not to do so. However, this might have been put in the script on purpose to give another very good reason why the Grinch hates the Whos so much.

Revealing mistakes

When Cindy is ejected from the garbage chute and lands in the snow, it bounces slightly when she lands on it, revealing a crash mat underneath.

When Betty Lou Who is reeling up a string of lights telling her husband Lou that “its all for the cause “a bulb goes out – next scene the light is back on.

Miscellaneous

Even though the movie is rated PG, the PG-13 rating screen appears at the end of the movie. However, this may only be on the original VHS and DVD release.

When Cindy Lou first observes the Grinch with his head between the cymbals of the giant monkey she is facing his left side – when she approaches him it is from the right hand side.

Viewer of How the Grinch Stole Christmas spots glaring blunder that has been missed for years

A viewer of the festive film, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, has pointed out a blunder they spotted that occurs in the movie, which fans have continually missed since its release in 2000.

The holiday classic stars Jim Carrey in the title role. The actor, 60, had to transform his appearance completely to get into character as the Grinch.

While donning a green, hairy suit, prosthetics changed the actor’s face completely, lining it with wrinkles and a turned-up nose.

However, one viewer took to social media site TikTok to point out a continuity mistake they spotted in the film – the Grinch’s eyes changed colour in one scene.

It was during the scene where the Grinch was wreaking havoc in Whoville that his usual amber-coloured eyes appeared to be brown.

The mistake wasn’t picked up on by the makeup department for the film or the crew, making it to the movie.

TikTok user @redcobweb said: “Every time I watch the Grinch I notice this one little mistake they made whether they forgot to either put his contacts in or to edit them in afterwards.

“So just Jim Carrey’s brown eyes are just there. And in the next scene, they’re back to that.”

Fans of the movie were quick to add their own thoughts, with one TikTok user writing: “No wonder he looks so different in that scene I can never understand why… now I know.” Another said: “JUST SCREAMED I NEVER SAW THIS AHAHAH.”

“That’s surprisingly scary without the contacts,” said a third.

While a fourth posted: “Watched this so many times and I’m ashamed I never noticed.”

It’s not the first realisation that fans of the film have made in recent years, with some sparking a debate on Twitter about the movie’s setting.

In the opening credits, the narration explains that Whoville is located inside a snowflake – a detail that many viewers have overlooked.

One shocked user exclaimed: “DID Y’ALL KNOW THE GRINCH TAKES PLACE IN A SNOWFLAKE. “

A second Twitter user admitted: “‘Never realised that the Grinch lives on a snowflake.”

“Anyone else completely forget that Whoville was on a mf snowflake?” Another questioned. “The Grinch must have been so small.”
