How to Draw The American Flag – Let’s Get Started!

For this first step of our guide on how to draw the American flag, you will need a ruler to make your life easier!

Once you have your ruler ready, this next step should be a very easy one for you to do. All you need to do is draw a straight horizontal line that will form the top of the flag.

That’s all there is to it for this step, so it’s on to step 2!

Step 2 – Draw the rest of the flag outline

Hopefully you still have your ruler handy, as you will be needing it for this next step of your American flag drawing.

To complete the outline of the flag, simply draw the remaining three sides of the flag as shown in the reference image. You should end up with a perfect rectangle.

To get the angles of the corners right, you could use a tool like a set square to help you as you draw.

American Flag Drawing

Now students that are learning are learning more about our history can learn how to draw an American flag that is blowing in the wind. The stripes do make a very dynamic drawing when they are curved, it just takes some extra time and care to get them right.

The Flag of the United States of America features thirteen equal stripes of red switching with stripes of white. The blue rectangle in the upper corner holds fifty white stars representing the 50 states which make up the United States of America. The stripes represent the 13 original colonies which gained independence from Britain. The flag of the United States has other names as well. It is also known as the Stars and Stripes, Star-Spangled Banner and most famously, the nickname Old Glory.

That being said, I would encourage young students to not get overly concerned that they have the exact right number of stripes and stars in their drawing. Especially if they are drawing a smaller one. As long as their flag starts and ends with red stripes, and their block of white stars looks about as full as my sample, their American flag drawing is bound to look really beautiful and everyone will know exactly what it is.

Question
How does the ratio 10:19 convert into inches?
Khalid Shah Durrani
Community Answer

What that means is, for every 10 inches tall the flag is, it will be 19 inches wide. So every 1 inch it is tall, that will be 1.9 inches wide, and every 1 inch it is wide, it will be 0.526315 inches tall.
