Learn how to sketch and color an American flag in a few simple steps.

Perhaps the most recognized symbol of the United States of America is the American Flag. When attempting to draw the american flag you must be observant and ask your self, “What does the american flag look like?”

Question 1: How many stripes are on the american flag? Answer: 13. What do the stripes on the american flag represent? The original 13 States.

Question 2 : How many stars does the american flag have? Ansver: There are 50 stars on the American flag since Hawaii became a state in 1960. Each star represents a state in the union and therefore the part of the flag with the stars is called “The Union.”

For this lesson you will need a pencil for sketching and an eraser for cleaning up your lines. Oh yeah, and a piece of paper would be most useful too! You can use a felt tip pen, ballpoint pen or marker for inking in the star’s outline.

Now let’s get started drawing “American Flag Graphics.”

American Flag Drawing Tutorial Step 1:
The American flag has thirteen stripes. I found that a handy way to learn how to draw the American flag is to start with the stripes rather than to draw a box and try to divide it up. To draw the stripes, you will need to sketch out 14 lines spaced roughly the same distance apart. (If you want to be more accurate, you can use a ruler to draw the lines and measure the spacing.)

American Flag Drawing Tutorial Step 2:
The “Union” portion of the American flag is seven stripes tall. So, count off seven stripes and draw a rectangle.

American Flag Drawing Tutorial Step 3:
The official length to length to heigth ratio of the American Flag is 1.9, with the union portion being as wide as 2/5 of its length, also called the “fly.” Most flags sold to the public are not this long. Flags are commonly sold in sizes such as 4′ x 6′ or 3′ x 5′.

Since the length to height ratio of the flag varies, you have some freedom as to where to trim it off. The drawing below is roughly the 1.9 ratio. I have shaded in the stripes to help place the stars. Note that the top and bottom stripes are shaded. The shaded stripes will be colored red in a later step.

American Flag Drawing Tutorial Step 4:
It can be tricky to draw 50 stars on a flag. Fortunately they are in a pattern that can be easily reproduced. There are 11 columns of stars alternating 6 stars high and 5 stars high. To begin drawing the stars, I am using a small upside down “V” shape. You need 5 columns and 4 rows. for this group of stars. You can use the stripes as your guide for the rows. The top and bottom rows of these stars fall roughly at the edges of the white stripes. You may want to take a peek at the next step to be sure to leave enough room for the next grouping of 30 stars.

Now add 6 columns of 5 stars high beginning on the outside of the previous set of stars.

Finally, erase your guide lines, refine your drawing and color your American Flag graphic with crayon or marker. Nice Job! You have created a fine piece of American Flag Clipart. Betsy Ross would be proud!

Step 3.

Draw the bottoms to the fifty stars of the American flag and then draw the thirteen horizontal stripes as you see here. Erase the guidelines you drew in the star box and then move to the last finished step.

Step 4.

This is what your American flag should look like when you are done. Get out your red, white, and blue markers, crayons, or pencils and color in your stripes and even stars. I hope you guys liked learning “how to draw the American flag step by step”.

Description: Flags symbolize countries and nations and every country has a different colored and designed flag. In fact no two flags from any country are the same. I myself live in the U.S.A, and because of that I will do a simple tutorial on “how to draw an American flag” step by step. The American flag has been a part of the United States for more than two hundred years serving as our symbol of the country’s strength and even unity. The flag serves a purpose as do many flags from different parts of the world, and that purpose gives its natives a sense of pride, and believe it or not but it also inspires millions of people. The creation of the American flag was created when President George Washington was in office. After the Continental Army stopped fighting the British Army, George Washington wanted a Grand Union Flag to be post upon Prospect Hill on January 1, 1776. The unofficial U.S flag had thirteen stripes colored red and white that represented the thirteen colonies. Instead of stars the flag had a blue colored box in the left corner that had a red cross of St. George of England, and then the white cross of St. Andrew of Scotland. In May during the year 1776 a woman named Betsy Ross sewed the very first official American flag. The flag kept the thirteen red and white stripes, but instead of the British cross, the flag bared thirteen white stars on a navy blue colored background. The thirteen stars stood for a new Constellation. During the years 1777 and 1960, the American flag underwent some changes before it got its final look. Congress passed several acts over time that changed the design, shape and position of the stars and stripes that we know our flag to have today. In January of 1794 the stars and stripes went from thirteen to fifteen after the year of 1795 in the month of May. On April 4, 1818 the flag went back to thirteen stripes but this time there where to be one star for each state of the country and this was to be added on July 4th. It was President Taft that ordered the stars to be in six horizontal rows with eight stars in each row and the stars where to be upright. President Eisenhower than ordered the star arrangement to be in seven rows with seven stars in each row and that was done on January 3, 1959. On August 21st of the same year Eisenhower changed the design of the flag again and this time there was to be nine rows of stars staggered horizontally and seven rows of stars staggered vertically. Today the flag is complete and has remained unchanged since 1960. The thirteen horizontal stripes consist of seven red and six white representing thirteen colonies. There are fifty stars that stand for all fifty states of America. Well there you have the history of the American flag and this tutorial will now teach you how to draw the American flag” step by step. Have fun, take your time and color well. Peace out!
