The Art Of “Zen” Christmas Crafting – How to Make a Grinch Christmas Tree
Crafting? Really? WELLFITandFED is a health and wellness site, right? Here is how I made the connection. “Crafting” is kind of “Zen” and “meditative,” so it fits my “WELL” category. A stretch perhaps, but I could not resist this adorable Grinch Christmas tree so here’s a quick tutorial for you to enjoy!
A few years ago my sister showed up at a family Christmas party with the coolest gift ever! You know the kind of gift that makes every person in the room smile. A gift, so whimsical that it brightens your day the moment you set eyes on it.
Behold How to Make a Grinch Christmas Tree
As soon as I saw it, I knew what my Christmas craft was going to be the following year. I quickly, and rather aggressively, searched for the maker of my sister’s “Grinch Tree.” That is when I found out how she came up with the idea. My sister’s friend let me know that she saw it on a morning show.
I followed the video’s step-by-step instructions, and voila! – Christmas cheer in a tree.

I have made these trees for family and friends three years running so; I thought I would share the “how to” with you!
How to Craft a Grinch Tree
Supplies:
- A lemon cypress tree(Try to get this locally if you can)
- A festive pot
- Green florist’s wire (I went to my local florist, and had them order a spool for me)
- Cover for the dirt in the pot (i.e. something that sparkles or looks like snow- optional)
- One ball ornament (i.e. an ornament that looks like something from a Dr. Seuss book)
- Take the tree out of its container, and plant it in a pot at a slight angle.
- Anchor the wire to the base of the tree.
- Wrap the metallic wire about halfway up the tree – starting at the bottom.
- Each loop should be an inch from the lower one.
- Don’t wrap too tightly, or your “Grinch Tree” will be too “skinny.”
- Bend the top of the tree to create the desired effect, and wrap wire around the top.
- Do not be afraid to really “man-handle” the tree – they are pretty resilient.
- Wrap the wire back down the tree, all the way to the base.
- Make sure the loops cross over each other.
- Snip the wire, and anchor/tuck it into the fold of the tree.
- Loop a two-inch piece of wire through the ornament hanger.
- Twist it like a twist tie, and anchor it to the last bit of wire at the top of the tree.
- The ball will weigh down the top of the tree, making it more “Grinchy.”
- Lastly, spread the cover over the dirt to enhance your tree’s festive look!
These photos were done at 11 pm one night. My girlfriend wanted a quick text of how the tree was constructed. I pulled them out so you might see visually how the tree comes together, Don’t mind my fancy outfit and my elaborate set!
It’s that simple! Now you have your very own “Grinch Tree!”
What is the best part about “Grinch Trees?” Well, they can be “unwired” and planted, after the holidays.
