About this artwork: Classification, Techniques & Styles
Watercolor is a painting in which gum arabic binds transparent pigments revealing the support of the painting. The gouache, of identical composition, is opaque. A watercolor is a water-based painting on paper. We rarely speak of a painting for a work painted in watercolor. Watercolor paintings are considered to be a unique way to creatively represent dreams, illusions, emotions and luminous feelings using water soluble pigments. However, painting with watercolors can be difficult. It’s a difficult medium to master, in large part because it can be ruthless and unpredictable. Mistakes are difficult to correct and its fluid nature makes it difficult to control. Yet it is these very qualities that give the medium its undeniable charm.
Painting is an art form of painting on a surface by aesthetically applying colored fluids. Painters represent a very personal expression on supports such as paper, rock, canvas, wood, bark, glass, concrete and many other substrates. Work of representation or invention, painting can be naturalistic and figurative, or abstract. It can have narrative, descriptive, symbolic, spiritual, or philosophical content.
ROY LICHTENSTEIN
Roy Lichtenstein was born in 1923 in New York. As a kid, he loved to draw in his spare time. After high school, Lichtenstein went to college where he earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in fine art. In between his studies. Lichtenstein served in the US Army during World War II in non combat roles.
Lichtenstein was known for his style of art called ‘pop art’ that was popular in the 1960’s. Lichtenstein, Yayoi Kusama and Andy Warhol were some of the most influential artists of the Pop Art movement.
Pop Art is all about making art with reference to things from popular and mass culture. Often everyday objects like road signs, hamburgers, comic strips, or soup cans etc. are used in the artwork.
Lichtenstein admired the skill of the comic book artist, who could create complicated stories of love and war in cartoon form. He was known for his use of cartoon strips from American comic books, that were very popular in the 1950s.
He began comic book art after drawing a picture for his kids, based on Mikey Mouse. Bugs Bunny also featured in some of his artwork.

LICHTENSTEIN DOTS
Lichtenstein was known for his use of Ben-Day dots, which he enlarged and exaggerated in many of his paintings and sculptures.
Ben-Day dots are small colored dots, usually in cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, that are spaced out and combined to create shading and complete images. They were used in color comic books in the 1950s and ’60s. They were invented as a printing technique and now are widely used in art.
Lichtenstein added stripes and dots to his artwork by using a metal screen as a stencil. He loved bright, primary colors. He also made glass and metal sculptures.
