Tihei mauri ora! This artwork shows the legend Hinepoupou, a Māori woman who lived during the 18th century. Renown for completing an epic open water swim from NZ’s North Island to South Island. She swam from Kapiti Island to Heron Rock and landed on D’Urville Island. She wrapped herself in bull kelp and tied them to gourds to keep herself afloat. Hinepoupou had the ability to call on her guardian kaitiaki, Kaikaiawaro to assist her in completing her journey. She was resourceful, confident in her abilities and well prepared. Her approach to the task at hand was decisive. I’m proud to share my artistic rendition of her on a beach in Raukawa Moana (Cook Strait). Read more about her at https://lnkd.in/gC8-V5vj

Proud to make this picture for the whanau. Hinepoupou, the first woman to swim Raukawakawa (Cook Strait), in her heroric swim from Kāpiti Island to Rangitoto guilded by Kaikaiāwaro the Dolphin. She is adorned in Pare kawakawa here wearing a belt of rimu-kauare, bull kelp. Also, she has two gourds tied to her belt to keep afloat. She was an excellent swimmer and she knew the tides. A lot of work went into achieving her look here. I’d like to thank the whanau for their guidance, my wife Melenaite for posing and my past models and tutors from figure drawing class #digitalart #sketch #toimāori

Here are some artworks I’ve been working on for my mother’s story, Tēnā koe e Toka (Hello Rock). My mother Ngarangi wrote and illustrated this original story. She grew up near the beaches and rocky shores of the eastern Bay of Plenty, Opape. There she would watch her Nanny dive for crayfish in the rock pools; she knew where they were. My mum said she would draw this generic rock, that these pictures are how she see the rocks. “It made sense to make it that shape and then put some eyes on it. And then I thought of the creatures hiding in the crevices of that rock, that is their home.” And that she thought of a little phrase in Māori for them to say, such as a greeting. What this book means to her is that it makes her remember where she grew up. I’m proud to share these revamped artworks with you all, Kia ora koutou. #illustrate #fond #memories

Hey folks, here to share my recent sketch and digital artwork with you all! Illustrating our beautiful Ponga tree was a challenge at first, sourcing references from several Ponga tree pics I finally got the branches looking right. I enjoyed colouring and shading which brings out the 3Dness of our national silver fern. The wahine performing the karanga, was part of a series which shows the protocol for people visiting the marae. This piece I dedicate to the performers of Te Matatini. I love to pause my screen and sketch performers when they strike a strong pose. Here also are close ups of Matua Hautere and his whanau on their intrepid journey thru the Marlborough Sounds. Featured here are their kaitiaki (guardians) Kaikaiawaro and Ruamano, the tauihu (prow) and taurapa (stern). I look forward to the new year and helping create more stories #digital #artwork #ArohanuiTeMatatini

This artwork is titled “Elder Māui revisits Tama Nui te Raa”. The brief was to design a tattoo which holds meaning to me. Our legendary ancestor Māui slowed down the sun. He attempted to make mankind immortal but met his end. What if he survived and lived to become an elder? He would have accomplished a lot more. He would have revisited old friends and come across old foes! I am grateful for the stories of Māui illustrated by Peter Gossage. His books have been a staple in NZ schools for more than two generations. My other major influence would be modern Japanese Tattoo. The themes that tie this style together are bright hues, story elements and spiritual symbols to name a few. The Japanese and Māori share similarities culturally. For instance, “Kami” is the term Japanese use for “energy that exists in all living things.” For the Māori we call this “Mauri.” I would like to animate Elder Māui in a style like the tv show Archer. Many folks in the Archer credits. here in NZ, animators do “one man gang” projects, which is just our lot. To the Polynesian people Māui was fit and handsome. Not a wreck it ralph replica made for gags sake! This reason drives me to animate a genuine version of Māui-tikitiki-a-Taranga for our screens and abroad. #digitalart #folkloremadedigital

Tihei Mauri ora! Here are some concepts of Matua Hautere which have put things in motion. In this project I set out to create authentic characters who feature face shapes, clothing (kākahu Māori), and adornment of early Māori people. On hand I studied the books, the Māori Paintings of Gottfried Lindauer and Roger Blackley’s Art of Charles F. Goldie. I paid close attention to face expression, pose and hairstyle of the sitters. Further research came in the form of stream video. With screenshots captured of standout competitors in our national Kapa Haka competition, Te Matatini. What I ended up with, was a model sheet of one body which features interchangeable heads and (maro) garments and adornment. I am looking forward to making more content in this direction. Thank you everyone for your views. #passionartist #historicalillustration #tautokoTeMatatini2022

Kia ora koutou, So we are making resources that tell our pūrakau legends- the first one we are working on is about Matua Hautere, the eponymous ancestor of Ngati Kuia. Matua Hautere travelled from Hawaiiki on his waka-Te Hoiere. He explored water ways, significant places and travel routes of the Marlborough Sounds. It was a thrill to research “the look”of Māori and depict this historical figure of Ngati Kuia. When I sit in hearing these pūrakau/legends, I’m visualizing these stories in comic book form. It is awesome to collaborate and apply my knowledge in figure and perspective drawing. To then colour in Photoshop making them into digi artworks. There are more intriguing recounts to be made digital. Our ancestors lived hard lives but they adapted. His accomplishments are relived thru our storytelling. They bring pride and boost the morale of his descendants.

Mulkirigala Rock Temple

The Mulkirigala Rock Temple is cradled on a rocky crag approximately 16km from the coastal town of Tangalle. Shrouded within a green forest, the Buddist rock temple requires you to ascend 500 steps before you can admire the beauty from its summit and experience a tranquil, soothing atmosphere surrounded by wilderness. Visit during the morning or evening hours to avoid the heat and humidity from the day. With 5 terraced levels housing caves, the rock temple complex evokes a sense of peace as you discover its varying statues of Buddha. The temple premises consists of 7 smaller structures within the 5 terraced caves, namely the Lower Temple Compound, Siyambalamaluwa, Bomaluwa, the Royal Temple Compound and the Upper Temple Compound. The caves are adorned with colourful murals and various figurines.

Once you reach the summit, passing the terraces, be amazed at the picturesque views of your surroundings! Within the premises, admire a vast collection of vibrant murals and sculptures depicting the scenes from the Buddha’s life. The temple is one of the most significant and sacred places on the southern coast. Remember to dress modestly before visiting the temple, covering your shoulders and knees as a sign of respect to the holy temple.
