Painting Description
A still life from Provence by artist Joanne Short. Completed during her residency in Rasteau in the Côte du Rhone. The Provençal tablecloth with sunflowers echos the sunflowers and blue and white jug the artist selected for this painting. A warm earth colour to the background helps to create a natural feel of Provence. A lovely still life from this established artist.

Joanne Short (born 1967)
Joanne Short’s paintings are among the most distinctive in Cornwall, characterized by their style and composition. Viewers of her work often remark on the serenity and strength conveyed through Joanne’s portrayal of natural beauty, patterns, and movement. She was featured on the ITV series ‘The Painted Garden’, where many admired her unique colourist approach to painting the landscape en plein air.
“I like to think that my paintings reveal a moment of calm and tranquillity amidst a hectic world; something to remind us of our holidays and rare moments of relaxation.”
Joanne Short

Sunflower in Blue Jar
Sunflower in Blue Jar by Sam Askin Not every artwork has a big back story… although I will say that the reference photo for this painting came from floral arrangement’s prepared by my cousin for her husband’s birthday party. I informed her that they were totally unnecessary, but I guess now they have at least fulfilled a purpose! I love painting still life botanicals, and it seems I like sunflowers too! I find painting the petals and their light and shade a challenge, and very different each time. I really like the striking combination of the sunflower and the bright blue mason jar in this piece, especially against the netural background. It’s the little things that stand out to me, such as the flecks of light and reflections on the benchtop from the bottom of the jar, the shadow from flower petals across the leaves, and the uniform highlights across the petals where the light has a brief continuous path. I could spend (and sometimes do) hours analysing the “little things” about paintings like this one, whether mine or someone else’s. Regardless of why you are staring, it is sure to brighten any room and mood!
