Easy acrylic cherry blossom painting

The 100: An experiment with acrylic

Los Angeles based artist Wessel’s first major completed project. An exploration of paint and canvas spanning 100 different pieces and countless styles. Evolution and experience brought together in a colorful kaleidoscope of acrylic. A beginning to the end of his ignorance. A necessary waste in the pursuit of beauty, balance, and understanding. Follow along with my random thoughts as I do my best to be who I am.

A taste of abstract expressionism experienced through the eys of a neophyte.

I am on an endless search for answers to questions that relentlessly assail my mind. As a commercial photographer for close to a decade I continually tried to put into visuals that which was going on in my head, express the emotions, visions, desires. Nothing clicked. It always felt like something was, just, almost. The purity of expression that I so desired eluded me. To describe it as frustration would be an understatement, more like molten lead in my gut.

On a lonely night in October 2017 something finally snapped. The boundaries of photography that I had placed cracked and something began to flow out. Rough, frustrated, oozing. I kicked away the limits I had placed upon myself and let loose. In a room with no windows I bega to be, me.

There is a lot still processing in my mind, and my technical skills desperately try to keep up as things come out. My art as of now is my story, a digestion of what was, hoping that I will some day be able to accept what is, and then hopefully what might be. I had turned a blind eye for so long to things that should be met head on.

All of what I do is very personal, my story. There are moments of clarity where I pull myself up and out of my maelstrom to answer larger questions, but for the most part I am in the suck. For me, for now, that is ok. My art as I do it helps me to define myself, to shine light in the dark places, to find the warmth of life that is buried deep.

Self-taught, I am always learning, open to the wisdom of those who have tread this path before me. Everything is an experiment, an attempt to do, an attempt to find a definition. I move at break-neck speed, in this weird place of knowing that I am repeating the many mistakes of old, yet, in that awareness, fixing what I can when I can.

I paint, I draw, I sculpt, I do whatever pops into my mind, when I can. I feel that there is no limit once you understand what creativity is. The limitations I feel around me are just lessons on how to make things work, to make me appreciate what is, and, given the right moves, what could be.

Can I just walk in and paint?

No – we’re only open for scheduled classes, which you can browse on our event calendar. Reservations are required and can be made online. If you’re looking for a less structured painting experience we recommend coming to one of our Open Studio sessions!

What days are classes held?

We hold public classes most evenings and weekend afternoons, but this can be affected by private bookings. Visit our Public Events calendar to see exact dates. Private events can be booked any time!

How do I sign up for a class?

Reservations must be made online in advance of classes. Click on “Public Events” at the top of the page to see our calendar and browse through the upcoming painting sessions. When you see one you like you can either click “Book Now” directly from the calendar page, or check out “Class Details” first and register from there. Follow the on-screen directions to complete your order.

I don’t have any artistic talent, will I be able to do the painting?

Absolutely! All of our classes are beginner-friendly, and our artists will walk you through the painting step by step. Acrylic paint dries quickly and can be layered almost endlessly, so it’s easy to try again if you don’t like something. Almost everyone comes away from our classes pleasantly surprised by what they accomplished!

Do I have to follow the instructions?

No! Our artists are here to show you how to recreate the class painting if you so choose, but ultimately your painting is for YOU and we encourage you to do whatever you want. Change the colours, add things in, go full abstract.. we want you to be happy with your art. You will not be graded!
