Elementary floral canvas painting ideas

  1. Basecoat the canvas with White paint, using the 1″ flat brush. Let dry completely.
  2. To Begin: Using either the 6″ circle template or the plate, draw a circle in the center of the canvas. Fill this in with Lamp Black and leave the edge ragged so you won’t have a ridge under the flower petals.
  3. Create the Large Flower Centers: Position the coins at least 1” away from the center circle and at 12 equally spaced intervals. (Similar to the numbers on a clock). Once positioned, lightly outline the coins. You can stagger every other coin to make the flower placement more interesting.
  4. Establish the Primary Colors: Red, Yellow and Blue. Refer to the photo for placement. Paint the flower petals using a #4 round brush and True Red, Bright Yellow and Primary Blue. For the correct spacing, leave three flowers between each of these primary flowers.
  5. Paint the Secondary Color flowers: Orange, Green and Violet. When you mix two primary colors you get Secondary Colors: Red and Yellow = Orange (use Bright Orange), Blue and Yellow = Green (use Bright Green), Blue and Red = Violet (use Dioxazine Purple). Every other flower will be left empty at this stage.
  6. Create the Centers: The centers of the primary and secondary colors will be painted in the complimentary color. Opposite colors on the color wheel are complimentary; Red and Green, Blue and Orange, Yellow and Violet, etc.
  7. Paint the Intermediate Color flowers: These are the colors you get when you mix one Primary & one Secondary color next to each other. This time you will mix these colors. Red and Orange = Red Orange, Yellow and Orange = Yellow Orange, Yellow and Green = Yellow Green, Blue and Green = Blue Green, Blue and Violet = Blue Violet, Red and Violet = Red Violet (use Red Violet). Place these flowers between the colors used to mix each one.
  8. Embellish the Centers: Use the wooden end of the brush to make Lamp Black dots in the center of all the large flowers. Dip the end of the brush in the paint and then dab in the flower. For uniform size dots, dip in the paint after each dot. For descending size dots, dab several times in the center before reloading.
  9. Second Row of Flowers: Using the #2 round, paint another wreath of smaller flowers just inside the edge of the black circle. Use the corresponding color above, but this time double load the brush with Snow (Titanium) White. Fully load the main color and then pick up white on the bottom of the brush and blend. You will get a pastel version of each color. Do the same to make the complimentary centers. The flower in the very center is white.
  10. Adding the Details: Using the wooden end of the paintbrush, add white dots in the center of the small flowers. Also sprinkle random size Lamp Black dots in the empty spaces between the large and small flowers. Lamp Black leaves are added around the outside of some of the flowers.
