Did you know the hibiscus is also the “Queen of Tropical Flowers”? Hibiscus flowers grow in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate climates worldwide, from Haiti to Hawaii and India to Illinois. They are beloved for their bright colors, delicate beauty, and cultural significance. It is the Malaysia ‘s National Flower, which is called “bunga raya“ in Malay: bunga means “flower,” raya refers to a “celebration.” Bunga raya literally means “celebratory flower.” In Hindu mythology, the hibiscus closely associates with the goddess Kali, a manifestation of primordial energy. She represents empowerment, and with that, admittedly, comes destruction, making her a fierce goddess. She symbolizes the death of the ego in the ultimate goal of human life in Hindu dharma — moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth). The red hibiscus flowers represent Kali’s divine consciousness and the life forces that pulse in all of us. The hibiscus is synonymous with “delicate beauty” in Japan and Europe. In North America, it is a symbol of beauty, fertility, devotion of the “perfect bride”. The hibiscus plant contains antioxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamin C, and anthocyanin. This flower has been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic traditional medicine. Its roots are used to make herbal mixtures to remedy hair loss, excessive coughing, and head lice. Recent studies have found that hibiscus may help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and can be used as a weight loss aid because of its effect on the human metabolism. My favorite fun fact about the hibiscus is that you can use it to polish shoes – that’s why it’s also called “shoe flower” ✨ ✨ What is your favorite flower ? #art #nature #culture #meaning #Hibiscus #hawaii #tropical #hindu #plant #myth #creation #illustration #design #illustrator #create #creativity #symbolism #kali #spring #artist #illustration #illustrator

✨ How can we create business and cultural value in a global career involving innovation, art, business, and technology? I am thankful to bring my presentation, “Bridging the World through Cross-Cultural Creativity & Innovation”, to students, staff, and alumni at University of Technology Sydney last month during the SXSW Sydney festival. I shared my experiences and designed case studies in the past ten years, and used bridges as a metaphor to bridge the gap between: Function & Fun: Story about being the artist of the “Twitter Fail Whale,” and Web 2.0 icon seen by millions, and my discovery of the cross-cultural redefinition and a new mindset about “Fail,” which enables us to look beyond the conventional meaning of failure, encourage us to create something new. Tech & Art: Creative journey of creating the Dumpling , Boba Tea , Takeout Box , Fortune Cookie , Chopsticks , and the Peacock emojis, used by billions of people. East & West: Creative process behind the localization campaign for a global company, The Walt Disney Company, in its new market, China, which successfully recruited 100,000 new employees for its opening in Shanghai Disney Resort. Business & Culture: Design process using creative building blocks — color, typography, and iconography that helped make localized identities for a global VC firm 500 Global in India & Korea that transcend linguistic barriers. Work & Life: How to turn my passion project of making emojis into an educational and business opportunity by collaborating with the Japanese company NTT (who invented emojis in 1999) and Computer History Museum launching the World Emoji Day event to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and equity, and transformed a business center into an engaging emoji art gallery: Turned life passion into a profession – the work you enjoy! After the Talk and Q&A, students got a chance to WIN a one-of-a-kind signed artwork giveaway ! Congratulations to the winners Attendees could also mingle with each other and participate in cultural immersion with delicious food and beverages by Chatime Australia (boba tea ) and Universal Cafe (dumplings ). Many thanks to the wonderful team UTS BUILD, UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) & UTS International for this wonderful opportunity. I thoroughly enjoyed presenting at the event and appreciated your support and dedication to building a global education: Veronica, Aaron O’Meara, Cindy, Mychel, James, Sita, Sigrid and many great colleagues from the University of Technology Sydney & UTS Alumni. Thank you, Tori, for capturing these lovely moments Great to see you all: Maxine, Laura, Maggie, Jo & Dr Judy Tang. Thank you for joining us! Thank you for having me. I look forward to more events like this to advocate the value of art, design, education & cross-cultural innovation. Thank you, U.S. Embassy in Australia. #edu #education #design #art #innovation #technology #communication #global #culture #event

✨ What does a chef and an artist have in common? They both require creativity, passion, and dedication to their craft. I’m thankful to be back to my hometown Sydney, with The James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement-Winning chef Martin Yan to celebrate World Food Day as part of the public events of the Inaugural SXSW Sydney held in Darling Harbour’s Tumbalong Park this month. Both Chef Yan and I believe that food & art are universal languages that transcend linguistic barriers, nurture bodies & minds, foster friendships, unite people, and bring joy to the world. During our session, Chef Yan demonstrated a few dishes, including his favorite dumpling , and incorporate local Australian ingredients such as seafood to pay tribute to “Tumbalong”, which is the native Australian language and means “place where seafood is found.” Also, since the demonstration is right next to the Chinese Garden of Friendship, Chef Yan and me also mentioned the history, culture and Chinese healthy eating. A conversation and cooking demonstration to show the power of culinary delights! I am delighted to collaborate with the U.S. Embassy in Australia and Investment NSW to facilitate the US & AUS lateral exchange through food, art and creativity. It’s wonderful to see our Harbour City come alive in a celebration of creativity & innovation. Much gratitude towards Alan, Nikki, Daniel, Adelle, Georgia, Irene, Steve, Joe & many more amazing people’s support ❤️ Thank you Team SXSW Sydney, Fenella, Ruby, Caris, Amy, Simon, Colin, Tayla, Caroline, Larissa and Team SXSW Hugh & Vivian. Thank you, Team University of Technology Sydney & UTS Alumni: Angela, Theresa, Meagan, Tracey, Veronica, James, Sita, Mychel and many more. As a member of San Francisco/Sydney Sister Cities Committee, I am delighted to facilitate the bi-lateral connections between Australia & US through art, food & creativity. cc: Claire, Dawn, Odette and many more. Which City’s Chinatown have you been? For me, I’ve been to Chinatowns in San Francisco, Oakland, New York, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, London, Berlin, Toronto, Melbourne, Brisbane, Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City & Kuala Lumpur. And of course, the Sydney Chinatown, as shown here, is particularly dear to my heart; as it is the first Chinatown I have been to after I left Shanghai to study in Australia when I was a teenager. I have many fond memories here: from my first bite of Cantonese-style dumplings at the street fare of Dixon Street in the beating heart of Sydney Chinatown; to the spectacular Lunar New Year celebrations for the traditional Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, and Mongolian lunisolar calendar; as well as incredible shows at the historic Capitol Theatre, a beautiful heritage-listed venue on Campbell Street, built from 1893-1928. Dating from the 1920s, Sydney Chinatown is cited as the largest of its kind in Australia. This bustling locale is home to an array of shops and the longstanding Paddy’s Market. The Koi Ponds, pavilions, and a teahouse are highlights of the tranquil Chinese Garden of Friendship. The Chinatown Friday Night Market is popular for Asian street food. I even briefly worked at a yum cha restaurant there when I was a first-year international student at University of Technology Sydney, where I sample-tasted many dumplings on the weekend. Those experiences shaped my eventual design of the dumpling emoji decades later – proudly serving billions of hungry internet foodie digitally on their phone and computer keyboards. I am thankful to be back in my hometown, Sydney, as a featured speaker during the inaugural SXSW Sydney festival – located in the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney) & Darling Harbour, where I got the chance to revisit beautiful Sydney Chinatown & friends at Haymarket HQ, right next to Chinatown & Central Business District of Sydney. Thank you, teams at U.S. Embassy in Australia, Destination NSW & Tourism Australia, Investment NSW for your ongoing support and facilitation for cultural and economic exchanges. Lovely to see you all in Sydney: Martin, Alan, Vivian & Hugh, Karen, Oi, Simon, Fenella, Colin, Alan, Tash, Michelle, Julie, Will, Jo & Judy, Maxine, Liz, James, Sita, Veronica, Angela, Theresa, Max, Stephanie, Murray, Meagan, Matthew, Tracey, Chef Jackie, Maggie, Laura, Cameron, Laura, Tyson and many more ❤️ Caption of the image: Yiying Lu in front of Sydney Chinatown’s formal gate, the North Gate, with the Chinese proverb from Confucius: “四海一家” and its English translation: Within the Four Seas All Men Are Brothers. #sydney #australia #travel #nsw #destination #exchange #chinatown #culture #cultural #culturaltourism

The Great British Art Tour: a dazzling young man who commands attention

Detail of Hibiscus Flower, c1922, by William Bruce Ellis Ranken (1881-1941).

With public art collections closed we are bringing the art to you, exploring highlights from across the country in partnership with Art UK. Today’s pick: Nottingham’s Hibiscus Flower by William Ranken

Louise Dunning, curator fine and decorative arts, Nottingham City Museums and Galleries
Fri 5 Mar 2021 07.00 CET Last modified on Wed 19 Oct 2022 16.09 CEST

W illiam Bruce Ellis Ranken was a Scottish-born aesthete and painter known for his sumptuous interiors and elegant portraits of Edwardian society figures. Hibiscus Flower, painted around 1922, is a luminous celebration of male beauty and the male gaze. At nearly two metres tall in its frame, its scale and palette of dazzling colours command attention.

Hibiscus Flower, c1922 (H137.2 x W106.7 cm) by William Bruce Ellis Ranken

The painting was in the artist’s own collection when he died in 1941 but, frustratingly, we do not know who the sitter is.

Intriguingly there are two other Ranken portraits of a very similar looking man in public collections. One, is the suited Portrait of a Young Man (Young Man Sitting With Left Foot Across Right Knee) at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum. The other, Portrait of An Anglo-Indian Student, is in the collection of Northampton Museums and Art Gallery and bears an even more striking resemblance to the subject of Nottingham’s painting; it shows the sitter in a more conventional shirt and jacket, holding a book. Could this be a portrait of the same man, painted in an early session (almost as a preparatory painting) and later worked up into the Hibiscus Flower portrait?

Ranken’s sister suggested that he might be the British ballet dancer Sir Anton Dolin – Ranken had painted him previously and she thought there was a likeness.

Whoever the sitter might be, it draws on the European tradition of paintings of partially clothed or nude women depicted in harems, favoured by 19th-century orientalist artists such as John Frederick Lewis (1804–1876) and Charles Knighton Warren (born 1856). Orientalist art propagated a European myth of the east as romanticised. Such images evolved into influential stereotypes that still support racist notions today. What is perhaps unusual with Hibiscus Flower is that, instead of a woman, we see a bare-chested young man – in green, gold-belted pantaloons against a background of elaborate, gilded red wallpaper. He holds the eponymous flower and sits in a casual pose, a pink scarf flecked with gold falling from his shoulder to spiral on the seat beside him. Because he is not named it adds to the sense of him being presented as an “exotic” ornament sitting in an enchanting interior.

The portrait was given to Nottingham City Museums and Galleries by Ranken’s sister Janette five years after his sudden death at 59 from a brain haemorrhage. Janette gifted more than 200 of her brother’s works to public galleries and museums, and his works can be seen today across the UK, from Belfast to Blackburn and Bournemouth.

You can see more art from Nottingham City Museums and Galleries on Art UK here, and find out more on the museums’ website.

This series is brought to you in collaboration with Art UK, which brings the nation’s art together on one digital platform and tells the stories behind the art. The website shows works by 50,000 artists from more than 3,000 venues including museums, universities and hospitals as well as thousands of public sculptures. Discover the art you own here.
