Christmas is one of the most important holidays of Christians. But not only Christians – people around the world celebrate the birth of Christ. Scientists argue among themselves whether this person really existed or not, but in fact it doesn’t matter, but it is important that this holiday warm our hearts and fill our souls with pleasant emotions. Naturally, the purpose of Christmas trees is to radiate this warmth and we feel it especially through paintings and the painting of Leonid Afremov is not an exception. This holiday brings special joy to children who still believe in Santa Claus who brings them gifts. It is wonderful when these feelings remain with us even when we become adults. At any age, we must continue to believe in miracles and they will actually happen.

Many people celebrate this holiday without even knowing its origin, but it is actually very interesting. Have you ever wondered why we decorate a tree and not another tree? Where did this tradition come from? So here is what you need to know about Christmas:

Many people think that the Christmas holiday was celebrated in the first year Anno Domini. But this is not the case – it happened in 336 BC that is before Christ. Paradox! Isn’t it? And it happened in the eternal city – Rome.
The tradition of giving postcards arose only at the end of 19 th century when in 1843 an Englishman Horsley painted the first Christmas card, a thousand of its copies were sold in London. However, after only a couple of years, postcards gained such popularity that the market was overfilled with hundreds of various Christmas and Easter cards.
What country do you think was the first to choose a fur tree as a Christmas tree? It’s hard to guess, but for the first time this tree was decorated in Latvia and Estonia. At first, the fur tree was decorated as a symbol of the tree of paradise. At the very beginning of the tradition, the tree was decorated with fruits, fresh flowers, and other decorations. Then we began to use sweets, nuts, and cones as decorations just clinging them to the tree. Later, this set was expanded by candles, garlands, and then glass toys. The authors of these toys were initially German glassblowers, and then masters from other countries took over their experience.

Today, Christmas is almost the only holiday that gives us a magic atmosphere. And it is important for us to feel it. The painting by Leonid Afremov depicting a Christmas tree certainly helps us with this.
