How to Make Painted Pumpkins

Painted Disney pumpkin ideas

Note: The hands-down easiest way to paint a pumpkin is to use a foam 9″ craft pumpkin. You won’t have to worry about irregular surfaces or covering up the color. You’ll also be able to use your pumpkin for decoration year after year!

If you’re going to use the real thing, follow these pumpkin painting instructions:

1. Don’t stress over choosing your pumpkin. The professional pumpkin carver I worked with told me that any pumpkin can be carved into a great design. So pick the pumpkin that works for you, OR just use the pumpkin closest to you.

2. Clean and dry your pumpkin. We used baby wipes when I worked with the master pumpkin carver. You can also use a damp rag and a bit of all-purpose cleaner or dish soap.

3. Seal your pumpkin (optional). Pumpkins are porous. Sealing your pumpkin will help the paint stick to the pumpkin. We’ve had good luck with this spray-on clear coat.

4. Sketch out a design or find a design to use. Easy coloring books for kids are an excellent source of stencils.

5. Transfer your design onto your pumpkin using carbon transfer paper. Just put your Disney pumpkin design on top of a sheet of carbon transfer paper and go over all the lines with a ballpoint pen.

6. Tape off sections for clean lines. Use painter’s tape to paint clean, even lines onto your pumpkin. This is especially helpful for any straight lines, dividing up the pumpkin into sections and doing something like painting half of a pumpkin one color.

7. Paint from lightest color to darkest: Identify what paint colors you need, then start painting with your lightest color first. This will minimize smearing and make any painted pumpkin mistakes much more fixable. Also, starting with a white pumpkin if you’re sticking with light colors will minimize the layers of paint you’ll need.

Attaching two gourds or two mini pumpkins to a plump pumpkin is a brilliant idea to make a Mickey Mouse painted pumpkin!

I love how painted cardboard circles make the Mickey Mouse ears on this Disney painted pumpkin. Use that painter’s tape I mentioned before to get a clean line separating the black paint and the red paint.

I admit, this one doesn’t use paint, but I had to include this Mummy Mickey Mouse no-carve pumpkin. I also think this would be really cute as a white pumpkin, or with several mini pumpkins.
