Getting Started – What Supplies Do You Need?
You will need nature’s little canvases – stones. The smoother the better, but you can work with any kind really. In fact the more asymetric the shape the more creative you can get. If you don’t have easy access to stones in nature you can also buy them in craft or garden stores.
You can use a variety of paints, acrylic paints are the golden standard as they are waterproof but you can use any other medium and with the help of gloss or matte varnis seal them.
We really recommend giving acrylic markers/pens a try to as they will allow you to make detailed designs easily. Kids will love chalk markers too.

Spiderwebs
Almost as zen as mandalas but perfect for Halloween. Paint the stones with black paint. Let it dry. Draw a spiderweb on the stones, either with gel pens (you will need to seal it afterward), with acrylic pen markers, or with a fine brush.
Jack-o-Lanterns and Pumpkins
One of the easiest and most fun Halloween-painted rock ideas is without a doubt painted jack-o-lantern stone and painted pumpkin rocks. Paint the stones with orange color and then get artsy with a black marker. Easy Peasy!
Ghosts
One of the easiest painted rock ideas for Halloween, especially if kids are the ones doing the project is rock ghosts. All you need to do is paint the stones with white paint and then get creative with black acrylic pens (or a black Sharpie marker).
Silly Monsters
There are no limitations when it comes to making monster painted rocks. Any shape of the stone is perfect! Choose a color or two for the body, paint the body, and let it dry. Now get creative with silly faces, and different colors to add body parts… The sky is the limit (well the size of your stone is but you know what we mean).
Witch
While you can transform any rock into a witch, triangle-shaped ones are the best!
Spiders
Incy wincy spiders are perfect for Halloween, and they pair up nicely with the rock-painted cobwebs. Paint a stone in one color (black is really cool, but you might need more than one layer of other paint over it for it to really pop, depending on the brand). Once the base paint dries, paint the spider on top. Chalk markers really pop here, but you will need to apply a layer or two of varnish to secure the chalk paint and not have it wash off.
Creepy Eyes
You won’t be able to stop making these once you start. They are so, so cool and perfect to make for Halloween. Find round or oval stones and paint them with white paint. Draw an iris in any color you want and red veins going out from the iris. It’s easy peasy. Adding gloss varnish is a must for this one (not really) as it gives the stones that glassy-eye look. Spooky and fun.
Owls
Owls are super fun to make for Halloween and all you need to paint in order to make one is a pair of big round eyes and a beak. Other than that any cool pattern will still make your owl look like an owl.
Candy Corn
Halloween is one of the sweetest holidays of the year, yes it’s all about spooky and scary, but it’s also about trick or treating and delicious candy. Candy corn is one of the most recognizable treats tied to this holiday so it only makes sense to make Halloween painted rocks look like candy corn. When you paint them, start with the brightest colors first and work towards the darker ones, waiting for the paint to dry before moving to the next one.
Haunted House
Make little masterpieces by painting a larger rock yellow, letting it dry, and then painting a haunted mansion on top of it. We recommend sketching out the house with a pencil before moving on to painting it. Using acrylic pens for this project works out best.
Skeleton
Find a dark stone or paint a stone with a darker paint as a base. Draw a skeleton with a white acrylic pen. Chalk pens are great for this too, but you will need to seal your rock painting with varnish.
