Black Cat Art Project

Supplies

  • Colored card stock (in Halloween-y color)
  • Fine tip black marker
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Markers
  • Black cat template (download form at end of the post)

Directions

Download and print out the black cat template on white card stock.

Using the fine tip black marker, draw parallel lines inside each of the empty shapes surrounding the black cat. Change the angle of the different shapes to give the art project more visual interest.

Do not fill in the cat’s eyes. Leave them blank.

Color the entire background a solid color or color each lined shape a different color.

Color the cat’s eyes yellow.

Cut out the finished art project from the border, then glue it onto your choice of colored card stock.

Doesn’t this Halloween craft look way harder than it actually is?! We love how it turns out!

Halloween Fun

Want some more fun and educational Halloween printables for your kids? We’ve got you covered! Our Halloween printables bundle has a little bit of everything – from color by number pages to pattern block mats & more. Your kids will have a blast practicing their fine motor skills, counting, letter recognition, and more. It’s packed with 77 pages of fun so there’s lots of variety and learning potential. Your kids will never get bored!

If you’ve seen our other fun crafts and activities for kids, you know we like to emphasize all the amazing skills kids can learn through arts and crafts.

This black cat craft is no exception!

It allows tons of opportunities for children to work on fine motor skills. All the tiny lines they draw on the background help the kids learn to use writing utensils with more ease.

The background line drawing also helps the children learn patience, focus, and perseverance.

Once they reach the end of their line drawing, they’ll also feel a sense of accomplishment which helps boost self-esteem.

Cutting the border off from the picture will help children learn to cut in straight lines.

Finally, gluing the cat to the card stock allows kids a chance to learn exactly how much glue is needed for this project.

As you can see, there are tons of benefits for children when they make this Halloween craft!

Adapting This Craft For Young Children

If you want to do this craft with young children who can’t yet draw all the little lines, don’t worry! We love sharing easy ways to adapt crafts for younger siblings.

Depending on the age of the child, there are a few ways you can approach this craft.

For the youngest of toddlers, just let them treat it like a coloring page. They can color the background any color they want and then follow the rest of the directions to frame the picture on the colored cardstock.

For slightly older kids around preschool age, we suggest asking them to color each of the various background shapes a different color.

They’ll still have the benefit of honing their fine motor skills in order to keep the colors within the lines, but it won’t be as complex as the individual lines.

For kids around kindergarten age, you can ask them to draw the lines but use a medium-sized marker tip.

Since the marker will draw thicker lines they won’t need to draw as many lines per shape but will still have to focus and work hard to achieve the end result!

So there you have it! With just a few simple tweaks, this black cat craft can be used by children as young as toddlers all the way through elementary school!
