Kyle Zinck’s Christmas window paintings attracting attention near and far

Kyle Zinck has been painting his picture window with holiday scenes for more than two years. This year’s Christmas image gathered a lot of attention on the We Love Nova Scotia Facebook group.

Kyle Zinck remembers his uncle David Zinck often painting his picture windows with traditional winter and Christmas themes, like snowmen and Santa Claus.

“I always said when I had kids and my own house, I always wanted to do it. And then it’ll be three years in May he passed away and I just started doing it that October,” says Kyle.

It’s been a few years of decorating his windows for three major holidays, but this year’s Christmas scene has received the most attention. His wife, Kayla Zinck, posted a photo of Kyle’s Mickey and Minnie Mouse painting to the We Love Nova Scotia Facebook group, which attracted more than 1,000 reactions and 95 comments.

“I’m just super proud of him. He loves doing it and our twins are really loving it this past year. They’re at the age now they know what daddy’s doing and want to help. I know his uncle would have loved each and every window he did. And I must say, this year’s is my favourite,” says Kayla.

Aside from a grade 10 art class, Kyle says he hadn’t done any painting prior to his first scene. He estimates he spent 15 to 20 hours on the image, which shows Mickey and Minnie in red outfits and Santa hats as well as Pluto with a letter to Santa. This one took the longest with the average painting taking approximately 10 hours, spread out over several days.

Most of that time was spent drawing the scene on the inside of his window from a photo on his phone and then using tole paint to complete it.

“If I’m outside, people will stop and say, so where do you get the sticker for your window?”

Kyle chose the Disney characters because his two-year-old twin boys Noah and Easton love them. They’re very attached to the paintings. Kyle recalls Easton crying when he went to scrape off this year’s Halloween scene, which also included Mickey and Minnie.

“Every time they leave the house, they’ll say, bye Mickey, bye Minnie, bye Pluto. They love it.”

Some of the other things he’s painted include a witch and cauldron, a basket and eggs for Easter, and a Christmas scene that included four major holiday cartoons – the Grinch, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and Charlie Brown.

He says one of his neighbours, who lives in an apartment building across the street from his home in Bridgewater, often sits out on her deck when he’s sketching and painting.

“She loves watching me do it. It keeps the neighbours happy too. It gives them something to look forward to every holiday.”

It puts Kyle in a good mood, too.

“I love doing it. It kind of puts me in a little happy place, sitting there. I find it relaxing.”

He’s already thinking about his next window painting, which will be Easter-themed and probably use the same characters.
