Easy DIY Textured Art

I had a few framed canvases that used to hang in our guest room, but aren’t really my style anymore. Instead of selling or donating them, I decided to upcycle them into neutral textured art for our family room.

This DIY is so simple and only requires a few materials! And because I already had all of the materials, this art was completely free to make!

What you need

  • framed canvas art (look at thrift stores and in the clearance section at stores like HomeGoods!)
  • drywall spackle or sheet rock compound
  • spackle knife or offset spatula
  • painters tape
  • spray paint or acrylic paint (leftover latex paint works too!)

If you want your frame to be a different color than your art, start by taping off the frame to keep it clean.

Apply spackle compound directly to your canvas with your palette knife or spatula. There is no wrong way to do this DIY! Make sure the entire canvas is covered and continue to move the compound around to create texture. For one of my pieces I crated a checkerboard pattern and with the other I made random strokes for a more abstract look.
