Fall Tree Art

Easy Autumn Tree Art for Kids

We love to explore the process of painting using creative techniques. One of our favorite art projects in the past was creating a simple sensory painting using carpet squares. We thought the same process would make beautiful, textured Fall tree art as well. Best of all, carpet squares are free at Home Depot.

You’ll need the following materials: (affiliate links)

    • Rug Sample Squares
    • Brown Paper Lunch Bag or Tree Template
    • Washable Paint, Autumn Colors
    • Easel Paper
    • Bowls
    • Glue
    • Scotch Scissors

First, cut your carpet squares into quarters for smaller art, leave whole for bigger art. Keep the carpet scraps too. Ha ha, photo bomb! As you can see, little hands are eager to play.

Brown Paper Bag Art Using Carpet Squares

Using a brown paper lunch bag, simply twist your bag from the bottom up, leaving a few inches at the top for your branches. Make 4-5 small cuts at the top and twist your smaller branches. Glue the bag to the paper. For more detailed instructions on the bag, see our tutorial on creating twisted brown bag art.

Squeeze the paint into bowls, dip, and paint. Sit back and watch your child explore.

Have you ever used cotton balls to paint? They make for some interesting stamps, and each one is unique. You can pull at them and fluff them up a bit to make different textures, too.

I’ve always used clothespins to create something for my kids to hold onto so they don’t get too messy. It also just makes it easier for their little hands to grasp.

Autumn Tree Cotton Ball Painting Craft

Start by drawing a tree trunk on a white sheet of paper using a brown marker. Then, provide your child with orange, yellow, and red paint along with their cotton ball clothespin combo. Allow them to dab the leaves onto the tree! Done!

Now, my son wasn’t interested in this craft. Trust me, it’s a good craft, but he’s a human. We’re fickle! I don’t pressure him into activities or crafts, because it goes against everything I believe in, and it creates unnecessary stress for the both of us. I made my own tree for photographs, and he created his very own version!

He used mine for inspiration for his own tree, and he dabbed the cotton balls and paint onto his page. His just had way more flair!

Then, he switched to using his fingers for the leaves! It actually inspired a worksheet found in my Autumn unit.

    Paint an autumn tree

Looking for a fun and creative way to celebrate the changing of the seasons with your kids? Autumn is a beautiful time of year, with its colourful leaves and crisp air, and what better way to capture that beauty than with a fun craft project.

Using just a few simple supplies like paper, paint, and straws, your kids can create a stunning autumn tree masterpiece. By using straws to print onto the leaves, this project makes unique and vibrant designs that capture the essence of the season.

This craft project is a great way to encourage creativity, and an excellent opportunity for children to learn about the changing seasons and the natural world around them. You might want to take your kids out for an Autumn walk to look at trees in nature, collect some crispy leaves to collage with, and get some inspiration before you start.

I think your kids will really have a blast creating their autumn trees, and they’ll have a beautiful piece of art to proudly display.

    3. Dip the end of a straw into the paint and carefully stamp it onto the paper to create the shape of a leaf. Try to press down just once for each leaf, and not move the straw around too much, this creates a nice, sharp image. Repeat the process with different colours and sizes to create a beautiful, vibrant autumn tree. You can see the beautiful Autumn colours we choose below.

This craft is perfect for children of all ages and is an excellent way to develop their fine motor skills, creativity, and imagination. And the end result is a unique piece of art they can proudly display at home or even give as a gift.
