—- The History Of A Snowman —–
When winter arrives, the snowman is a symbol that expresses the season’s spirit and brings joy in festivity. Just like the flower blossoms for spring or pumpkin carvings in autumn, the snowman is a very well-known seasonal figure that makes the winter season filled with lightheartedness. When the perfect snowfall arrives, the snowman usually goes right along with it. Balls of snow are piled upon one another and stacked to portray the body of the snowman, and any household items are creatively added to make a seasonal friend accompany your front yard. It takes some effort along with the ideal type of snow to make such a magical being.
While we don’t get the chance to make a snowman, here in Florida (and some of us are VERY thankful for that), we still find the history of this winter tradition, very interesting.

Documentation of the first snowman is unclear. However, Bob Eckstein, author of The History of the Snowman, documented snowmen from the Middle Ages by researching artistic depictions in European museums, art galleries, and libraries. The earliest documentation he found was a marginal illustration from a 1380 book of hours, found in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague. The earliest known photograph of a snowman was taken circa 1853 by Welsh photographer Mary Dillwyn, the original of which is in the collections of the National Library of Wales.

While the origin of snowmen remains unclear, they have been used throughout history to make statements. In 1511, the city of Brussels held a snowman festival in hopes of appeasing its hungry and poor citizens. However, instead of building snowmen, the people built pornographic sculptures throughout the city.

The concept of snowmen had made its way to North America by the Schenectady Massacre of 1690. It is said that on the night of the massacre, two guards who were in charge of guarding the north gate of the settlement of Schenectady built two snowmen to guard the gates while they went to the pub.

Snowmen became more mainstream when Frosty the Snowman came out in 1969, which originated from a song of the same name from 1950…
“Frosty the Snowman”, the popular Christmas song written by Walter “Jack” Rollins and Steve Nelson, was first recorded by Gene Autry and the Cass County Boys in 1950 and later recorded by Jimmy Durante.[3] It was written after the success of Autry’s recording of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” the previous year; Rollins and Nelson shopped the new song to Autry, who recorded “Frosty” in search of another seasonal hit. Like “Rudolph”, “Frosty” was subsequently adapted to other media including a popular television special.

In Japan, snowmen are good luck charms and are constructed with two balls and a lit candle placed in a cavity of its stomach.
It was a snowwoman that was a rallying cry for the French in the revolution of 1870; she was a beautiful sculpture created by some of France’s most accomplished artists who, at the time, happened to also be soldiers on the battlefield.
The Miracle of 1511 in Brussels represents one of the most important events in the snowman’s history. The “Woodstock” of the Middle Ages, it featured hundreds of racy and politically charged snow scenes throughout the city for all to see. At a time when most people had no voice and few even could read, this was a chance for society to express itself, thanks to free art supplies having been dropped from the sky in the form of snow.
