In Another Light: Danish Painting in the Nineteenth Century

In Another Light is the first comprehensive volume in English on 19th-century Danish Art, a subject that is increasingly acknowledged as an essential subject of the history of art.

The extraordinary outburst of artistic energy that occurred in Denmark between 1790 and 1910 has few rivals. Within three generations Danish painters developed a national school that rivaled the artistic centers of France, Germany, and Britain. The range of outstanding works created by the Danish artists includes Classicism, Romanticism, Impressionism, and Symbolism.

The book is illustrated with a comprehensive selection of more than 200 key works of art, and an important selection of comparative illustrations including period photographs and ephemera.

At the Glyptotek in Copenhagen I was amazed by paintings of Denmark’s Golden Age. C.W. Eckersberg was the father of this school of extremely gifted artists including Martinus Rørbye, Christen Købke, Wilhelm Bendz, Constantin Hansen, Johan Lundbye, Ditlev Blunck, Jens Juel and others who painted their studios, views of Italy, gatherings, landscapes at home and an artist colony that developed at the northern most remote tip of the country called Skagen, known for treacherous waters and tragedies for fishermen who made their livelihoods there. Some Danish artists studied in Paris and brought impressionist trends home. Symbolist trends seeped in and the golden age faded. Dr. Berman is a gifted, academic. She not only teaches history but analyses composition and painting techniques in a clear and compelling way. In Another Light is the best book in English about the Golden Age of Danish painting.

Elephant domain | HANDMADE PAINTING

Iconic and colorful elephant painting in Gade’s typical style; majestic with big eyes and beautiful harmonious colors.

About Gade

Gade was born and raised in Copenhagen. He now lives in Jutland, and spends most of his time playing music and painting. His background in music has taught him to express himself on canvas with paint and brushes. “Method, form, rhythm, pace and strength are the cornerstones of my music and paintings.” About his paintings he says “My enthusiasm and joy for animals is expressed in my paintings. The animals are a clear expression of the care, attention and love we must show our fragile earth”.

All paintings from Malerifabrikken are made with the best materials, from the stretching of the canvas – to the use of acrylic paint with an incredibly high content of color pigment, which ensures that the colors do not fade, but retain color fidelity.
All paintings are supplied with hangings and a description of the artist who painted the work – all paintings to be created in Malerifabrikkens’s own studio.
All paintings are hand-painted from scratch and all motifs are thus unique, which also means that there may be deviations from the image you see here on the webshop. We do our utmost to get as close to the original in terms of colors and quality.
