Katelyn Larese - The Voice Guests had a chance to paint during the grand opening celebration at Painting with a Twist in Chesterfield Township.

After hitting a snag when applying for a liquor license, Painting with a Twist is now officially open in Chesterfield Township.

Franchise owner Susan Gentry initially planned to open the doors to the studio on Gratiot Avenue this past winter, but her plans were stalled when her landlord informed her she wouldn’t be able to sell alcohol and the township board postponed her request for a liquor license last fall.

The business is known for classes and parties where guests sip on beer or wine while painting a picture with help from professional artists.

“We were ready to throw in the towel at that moment,” Gentry said.

Ultimately, she was able to negotiate her lease to sell alcohol at the studio, and the township board approved her license request conditional on her returning it to the township if she ended up not operating the business. A couple of months later, she received final approval from the state Liquor Control Commission and officially opened the doors to the studio this month.

“We are so ready to open,” she said. “There’s a lot of excitement and buzz.”

A grand opening celebration took place on March 22 at the studio, which is located in the Gratiot Crossing Shopping Plaza south of 23 Mile Road next to Jillian’s Coney Island and Grille. Many local citizens and township officials attended the event.

Gentry, of Romeo, also owns Painting with a Twist franchises in Shelby Township and Greece, New York. There are 14 studios currently located in Michigan, and Gentry operates the only two in Macomb County.

“I have high hopes for this one,” she said at the grand opening event in Chesterfield Township. “I think it’s going to really shine.”

The liquor license allows the business to sell drinks like beer, wine and hard cider as well as permit guests to bring full-sized sealed bottles into the store.

“We don’t sell that much (alcohol),” Gentry said. “The amount that we sell in alcoholic beverages is less than 5 percent of the income.”

Through her new studio, Gentry is also planning to give back to the local community. All Painting with a Twist studios conduct monthly fundraisers called “Painting with a Purpose,” which helps raise funds for non-profits.

“We partner with local non-profits and give 50 percent or more of the proceeds back to whatever organization that we’re partnered with,” said Katie Richard, an operations consultant for Painting with a Twist. “To date, we have raised over $2 million system-wide for local non-profits. We want to be able to raise as much money as possible.”

The business, itself, was founded in Louisiana on the basis of helping others after Hurricane Katrina, Richard said.

The Chesterfield Township location is staffed with six professional artists who provide step-by-step instructions to guests. Some “tricks of the trade” are also shared with classes, Gentry said.

“This is fun art, not fine art, so don’t be hard on yourself,” she added.

The studio space also features a party room that accommodates all types of occasions.

Gentry’s drive to open her three studios stems from her relationship with her son Alexander, who died in 2011 after being hit by a drunk driver at age 21. For her 50th birthday that year, she asked him to cut his dreadlocks. He obliged and sent her a text message to let her know her present was waiting for her at home.

“I got home and there’s this beautifully wrapped gift – it was his dreads,” Gentry told The Voice last fall. “I never saw him. He never came home. He was hit by a drunk driver that night.”

A memorial for her son hangs on a wall near the back of her Chesterfield Township studio.

“My son was artistic and loved a good party, so he’s a part of it,” she said. “I get to celebrate him every time I open up the door to the studio.”

The new studio, located at 50850 Gratiot Ave. in Chesterfield Township, is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, go to facebook.com/PWATChesterfieldMI or paintingwithatwist.com.
