Week 19/52
52 Cups of Coffee

“A Piece of Cake”

“A party without cake is really just a meeting.”
– Julia Child
———————————————————

*WARNING! This is a super long post. Grab a cup of coffee and have a seat it’s a good one. It may cause you to go out and buy a cupcake afterwards.

“Really?!” Said my husband. “You are going to get up and watch this wedding? You can’t be serious?”

“Yes, I most certainly, am!” I said defiantly, “. And I’m going to wear a fancy hat, be in my PJs and have cake too!”

Well. that was partly true.

1. 2am was waaayyyy too early wake up especially for a mother of two young active boys. THANK GAWD for YouTube Live. LOL

2. Yes I was in my PJs but *sigh* no Fancy Hat . fancy “morning hair” yes. Well, I would have made an actual effort if I had know George Clooney and David Beckham was going to be there.

3. Cake! Yessss! Well. I started painting it anyways.

Mmmmm Cake! You know it’s a special occasion when a good cake is involved. It’s not unusual for me to be distracted by food. There are days when all I can think about is pickles, or buffalo wings, Chinese food, or chocolate . mmmm chocolate cake. (Nom,Nom,Nom!)

When I attend a wedding, a birthday, an anniversary or any kind of special occasion . food is one of the most important things on my list (right after the people or person we are celebrating of course). There is no denying that The Cake is official the MVP of the entire celebratory smorgasbord.

While I watched the royal wedding this past weekend it made me wonder (and also remember) how much work, time, effort, money . blood, sweat and tears it took to pull off such a big event. I’m sure it was no “Piece of Cake” especially for something as grand and timeless as a Royal Wedding.

The whole world was invited to watch this wedding thanks to social media. Reportedly around 2,000 guests personally attended the actual ceremony, over 650 attended the queens luncheon and around 300 people attended the evening wedding reception. Woof! The food, the drink, THE CAKE.

I briefly spoke with Debi Macleod, owner and pastry chef of Avenue Bakery Airdrie. Debi said that it was a beautiful yet simple 3 tiered elderberry and lemon sponge cake topped with fresh flowers. She looked off dreamily recalling the beauty of it in her memory. It reportedly had 500 eggs in it to give it that sponge-like consistency ( I’m guessing that the Royals are not to worried about high cholesterol.)
“ There was enough cake made to feed 4000 people! ” Debi said.

Because I’m secretly a “facts nerd” and love to research the subject I paint I came across 6 Sweet Wedding Cake Traditions that may peek your interest.

1. Why save the top tear of the cake? Many couples today freeze the top layer of their wedding cake and enjoy it together on their one-year anniversary. HOWEVER Traditionally the top tear was save for their first child’s christening. It wasn’t unusual for a child to “show up” a year or so after the marriage.

2. Slicing the cake is now considered the first task or activity the newlyweds do together, so it’s a special moment. But, did you know that historically the cake was cut by the bride alone as a symbol of losing her virginity. Awkward.

3. Feeding each other a piece of cake or in some cases smashing the cake in the face. Is a symbol of love, sharing and a life of wanting for nothing. In the beginning it was celebrated by a groom breaking a loaf of bread over the brides head while the guests picked up and ate the crumbs from the floor.

4. By the 17th century the grooms cake was created. I’m not to sure why, maybe the groom was starting to get jealous of all the attention the bride was having. While today’s Grooms Cakes are more colourful and stand as statement to the grooms likes and hobbies it originally began as a small fruit cake. This cake was cut up and given to the guests as a treat to take home.

5. Why is the traditional wedding cake white? We all know that white is the colour of virginity and purity but the real reason it was white was because of practicality. Icing is made of sugar.. and sugar is white. The white icing quickly became symbolic of ones status. The whiter frosting, the more refined and expensive sugar.

6. What’s with all the tiers? In the beginning the wedding cake was a stacked pile of spiced buns. It was said that if the newlyweds were able to kiss overtop of the pile of baked goods then they were to have a lifetime of prosperity.

I felt the title “Piece of Cake” suited this particular piece quite well. Even though it is literally a painting of a piece of cake the actual creation of this particular coffee painting was no “Cake Walk”. I actually scrapped my first one because I hated it so much (that like never happens) I was using a new kind of coffee which was actually turned out to be a coffee and chicory extract called CAMP from the UK. (Long story. don’t ask)

I also struggled a bit on making my strawberries look like plump shiny strawberries and to give my cake that “white cake” look. It did however make me want to experiment more with painting white objects and with the textured skin of certain fruits and vegetables. So you may see a few more paintings in the future leaning towards the lighter side of life.

Special Thanks to Debi at Avenue Bakery here in Airdrie. She was super sweet and allowed me to take a few snapshots of my “Piece of Cake” coffee painting with one of her beautiful cakes. I couldn’t resist stepping into her business after researching this particular subject matter. It was delicious.
