On the Canvas Factory website head to our Canvas Art. Then, in the search tool, type in ‘Black And White Pattern’. Select one of our patterned black and white prints. Once you’ve received it, paint over it completely with a shade of your favourite colour. Then you can use your fingers to draw patterns on the artwork, revealing the pattern behind. Alternatively, wherever you see white, paint some colour there! Have fun and experiment.

The wonderful thing about creating your own wall art is that thoughtfully made items give your home a unique personality. DIY always ends up being more special. And with so many options out there for creating custom art, there’s no reason to choose something that everyone else has!
What Is DIY Wall Art?
Yes, easy DIY is actually a thing! But what does it involve, exactly? Well, it’s super easy – not only to create, but it typically uses materials that are easy to source.
Let’s face it; you don’t want to have to search the ends of the earth to find custom material for a beautiful work of art. That said, to create something beautiful, funky or eye-catching, you do need to be committed to finishing things!
With DIY wall art, you’ll also be less likely to part with it, so it’s a wonderful investment in time and resources. You don’t need to be good at craft to conquer easy DIY art. That said, it’s got to be easy to create.
Sometimes you just need someone to help you channel that creativity into a place of refinement. If you’re that person, why not invite your crafty friends over for a craft-a-noon or get your kids and their friends involved in the process?

Paint coffee stirrers wall art
Ice cream sticks are out, but coffee stirrers are in. This is the ultimate way to reuse something you would otherwise just throw in the bin! Double HCB shows us how to recreate this fun retro favourite.
Supplies for Easy DIY Wall Art Tutorial:
- Blank canvas
- Black acrylic paint
- Wide paint brush
DIY Wall Art Tutorial:
I started with a blank white canvas. I had originally painted it a shade of cream for another (abandoned) project, so I painted over it with white. Because paint is so expensive I cheated and used primer. It actually worked really well. You can use a plain, gessoed canvas, fresh from the store, and skip this step, but I do like the look of brush strokes.
Step 1: I flipped the canvas upside down (to encourage paint to flow) and, with a giant paintbrush quickly dipped in water and some black acrylic paint, starting making broad brush strokes.
Steps: 2, 3 & 4. I flipped the canvas back around so I could shape the composition and I built up the paint in layers. I let little pops of white peek through but made other sections very inky.
Step 5: I flipped the canvas over again so I could paint the bottom. I wrapped the painting around the sides, too, which creates a neat effect. And it’s a great way to avoid deciding on a frame (although I have some tips on that).
And, voila! My simple but striking, DIY wall art! You could easily create this DIY art in other colours or by using gold leaf instead of paint. I hung it in the dining room to show it off, but it’s going in the stairwell soon enough. It fades in kind of a neat way against the white walls, but it will really pop against the greige walls. You should know, I suffer for my art. When I first picked up this canvas to get to work, I narrowly missed touching the giant centipede lurking inside. I threw down the canvas, phoned and harassed Hubby at work (looking for centipede squashing tips, I guess? It is officially his job), then took anther look and the centipede seemed to have vamoosed. Not entirely convinced, I poked at the canvas with a stick and out he popped. Why do they like to run toward me? Shudder.
