Face Paint ideas, tricks, and tips for kids
You are not getting these face paint ideas from face painting experts. You are getting this post from people who have done youth ministry, library work, camping, and more, and have had a fair share of children’s faces to paint. These face paint ideas, tutorials, tips, and tricks are for those of you that aren’t pro’s and never will be ;). keep scrolling to get to the tutorials!
Use good face paint.
Go big.
Simplify your color palette.
Watch the eyes.
Be mindful of ages.
Simplify your steps.

Inexpensive paintbrushes work well.

Below are two full-faced videos.
Adjust the butterfly a bit to make a princess. Don’t include the antennae and body, use a smaller black outline (ending just under the eyebrows works well), and add a bit more in the way of colored dots. And sparkle…always sparkle! The lion is a basic animal concept. Go ahead and adjust it for various animals. Use a gray base and black whiskers for a cat. Perhaps gray and pink with big ears for a mouse? For young children skip the brown base coat and go straight to whiskers and ear!
These face painting tutorials are not perfect.
They are painted quickly (like you would for real!) and photographed. No fussing, fretting, or do-overs. The goal is for you to get a true idea of what these would look like in real life. And you can see that, although they aren’t perfect, face painting is still something that most anyone can tackle with success. If a bit more time and care were taken these would have been beautifully done. Just like yours can be, if you choose!
Also, don’t forget the importance of taking off the face paint well! Stash a set of good facial wipes in your bag for whenever the fun wears off. Getting the paint off with soap and water is just not as simple as you would think. Be smart. Bring powerful wipes along and cut out the fuss (and possibly tears).
Face Painting ideas and tutorials!
Princess Crown:
This is a favorite for little girls, usually in pink or purple[easyazon_link identifier=”B00026ZEDK” locale=”US”]face paint[/easyazon_link] with LOTS and LOTS of glitter. Thankfully, it’s simple to do!
By the way, there is a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00EEABZ60″ locale=”US”]kit just for making princess crowns.[/easyazon_link]Super easy!
- Draw 3 teardrop shapes on the forehead. The largest of the three is in the center of the forehead with two smaller ones towards the side.
- Use a series of dots to create the “crown” across the forehead and connect the 3 shapes. Outline the teardrop shapes with dots as well.
- If desired, use black and sparkle to add dimension.
Sparkle Swirls:
This is another favorite for little girls. It goes well with fairies, princesses, angels, and any sort of girly costume. A few pink swirls and a bit of sparkle is all it takes to get this done! This one looks a bit like an octopus. If you take a bit more time you could have a non-octopus version, and even a full face of swirls and sparkle!
- Create a swirl or two starting at the eyebrow and down towards the cheek. This isn’t an exact science!
- Use a contrasting color to add a border of dots along the swirl.
- Use color to add a bit of dimension to your swirl.
- Glitter. Add lots of [easyazon_link identifier=”B00026ZEDK” locale=”US”]glitter[/easyazon_link]!
Dog Face:
Change up the colors to match your child’s costume. You can tell here that cheap face paint was used.
- For older children, add a base of color around the eye (take care not to get too close). For younger children, skip this step.
- Outline the patch with black. Add a nose, line from nose to mouth, and several “whisker” dots.
- Use red to give your “dog” a tongue.
- Add a little line of black on the tongue for dimension.
Ninja Turtle:
We used cheap face paint on this tutorial so you can see the difference even that change makes on how good it looks. The paint we used also ended up staining for a couple of days. So, use good face paint!
Learn how to paint a mask if you learn anything. You’ll use it repeatedly. Change the colors, eliminate the base color, change the shape a bit…the possibilities are endless for how you will use this one! Use good quality face paint to be sure this looks good (and not uneven).
- Apply a base coat (green for a Ninja Turtle). We’ve recently had a reader clue us in to a little trick. Put on a base of yellow, let it dry, and then put on your green. The green will be stronger, and there won’t be as much staining! We are so lucky to have awesome readers who let us know about these tricks!
- Outline the eyes first, creating the mask shape as you go out.
Mustache:
This one was really popular with Mario costumes (or is it Luigi?) and pirates. It’s a good one to know how to do. And super easy!
- Use a brown bottom layer and apply in a mustache shape.
- Outline the shape with black and add an additional dimension, if desired.
Again, we aren’t professionals, by any means. And professionals are the best, obviously! But we have done our fair share of parties, youth events, and fairs to know that kids tend to love face painting regardless of your skill set.

At Halloween, makeup or mask?
Makeup, of course! Not only is it loads of fun, it’s also safer. In fact, masks are often uncomfortable and can even be dangerous, since they prevent children from seeing properly. Accidents happen so fast; it’s better to be safe than sorry!
Here are some of our best tips on creating incredible Halloween makeup looks.
- Start by rummaging through your own makeup bag. You might find a lipstick, gloss, blush or eye shadow you no longer use! But remember that mascara on children is never a good idea.
You can also purchase non-toxic, hypoallergenic, water-soluble makeup designed specifically for this purpose. - Prepare children’s skin by applying a moisturizer over their faces. This will:
- protect the skin;
- make the makeup pencils glide more easily;
- facilitate the removal of the makeup at the end of the evening (makeup removal cloths are the best for this job).
- Use synthetic makeup sponges to cover the larger surfaces with a basecoat. Fine, narrow and angled brushes are great for precision work and small details.
- Start with lighter colours and end with darker ones.
- Do some prep work: for example, use a makeup pencil to dot out the outline of your shape. Then, just connect the dots into a line to create your design.
- To apply makeup to young children, set up shop in a quiet place, without distractions. For very young children, choose a design that takes only minutes to do and avoid the eyes and mouth.
- For convenient Halloween makeup products at affordable prices, visit your nearest Uniprix store. You’ll find special Halloween makeup (pencils, creams, etc.), as well as fantastic accessories in the cosmetics section (false eyelashes, powder, fake nails and glitter eyeliner). For realistic, head-turning results, choose colours that match the child’s costume.

Are you short on inspiration? Here are a few easy designs that are bound to delight your little ones: a wicked witch, a scary skeleton, a beautiful butterfly, Spiderman or a cute Dalmatian.
Witch
Step 1
Mix a bit of black with some white to get a light grey.
Step 2
Using a sponge, apply the grey over the entire face. Add a bit of black over the eyes and under them to create dark circles. Draw wrinkles on the forehead.
Step 3
Emphasize the eyebrows. Colour the lips in black.
You can also go for a more subtle look by mixing light green and white for a paler complexion. Follow with mauve on the eyelids and cheeks.
Skeleton
Step 1
Apply a thick layer of white over the entire face.
Step 2
Draw black circles around the eye area and fill them in.
Step 3
Using a brush, draw a square jaw with teeth around the mouth
You can draw lines on the forehead using a combination of red and black, and use grey (black+white) to add contour and create hollow cheekbones.
Butterfly
Step 1
Using a black liner, draw the butterfly’s head and antennae on the child’s forehead. Then, draw the insect’s body on the child’s nose. Trace the contours of the upper wings around the eyes and the lower wings on the cheeks. They can even go down to the chin, if you wish.
Step 2
With a white liner, make another line inside the first black line to give the impression of light and soften the contours.
Step 3
Using cream makeup in a colour of your choice, fill in the wings. Add colourful motifs in the centre of the wings.
Step 4
Sprinkle some glitter over the face. Egg white or glue for false eyelashes can be used to paste the glitter.
Spiderman
Step 1
Draw red lipstick lines over the entire face and blend with your fingers.
Step 2
Using a black liner, draw the webbing, making pie wedges starting from the nose. Finish the spider web by outlining the face with curved lines.
Step 3
Draw a spider: 1 small circle for the head, one big circle for the body and 4 legs on each side.
Dalmatian
Step 1
Using a sponge, cover the entire face with white makeup. If you don’t have a white cosmetic liner, use a light foundation and make a tan-coloured dog.
Step 2
With black liner, draw a nose, mouth and whiskers.
Step 3
Draw a black spot around the eye, fill it in, and add other smaller spots of various sizes all over the face.
