FOUNDATIONS OF OIL PAINTING

A look inside this powerful course.

Lesson 1: Materials

Setting up your Work Space. Understanding your paints, brushes and palette management and tools every artist’s needs. You don’t need a studio to do your art.

Lesson 2: Values

Understanding Value, Separation of Lights and Darks are essential to depict form. In this lesson we paint a black cube and white sphere to learn and understand the properties of light and shadow. Doing this exercise with show you how to create convincing light and dimensional form.

Lesson 3: Notans

I have found the application of the Notan Principle to be one of the most powerful tools for painters because it helps you quickly problem solve and see what you are going to paint. It becomes a roadmap for your painting.

Lesson 4: Notans & Lighting

I call this the “Holy Grail” of painting. In these 4 Notan painting exercises we dive deeper into the Notan principle and apply it to 4 powerful lighting motifs in 4 small studies.

Lesson 5: Notans Applied to Color

In this figurative painting of a woman in a white dress in bright sunlight we will work with our last lighting affect, the Dramatic Direct Light Motif. In this lighting effect the light is bright and you clearly see shadows. The values are more hight contrast in this type of light compared to the relative light motif.

Lesson 6: Value of Color

Understanding and practicing how to translate value to color is so powerful! See how this technique has made my art get to the next level. In this lesson we will use our #3 notan, the Relative Value Motif to paint a full color 8” x 10” painting of Sunset Cliffs. Our objective for this lesson is to mix harmonious colors with keeping within our 4 value structure. .

Lesson 7: Drawing Fundamentals

Learn the drawing basics of linear perspective in these 3 simple but powerful modules. Practice drawing perspective in your sketch book using the photo references provided in the Lesson Images folder. Keep these principles in mind when painting.

Lesson 8: Color Charts

The best way to learn color is to practice mixing paint with this color chart lesson. Learn the attributes of color: Value, Hue, and Chroma and how to mix color with these in mind. Join Rose in this step-by-step 7 color chart project so you can learn more about color theory by painting your own color charts. Get your Palette Knifes ready for mixing!

Lesson 9: The Power of Design and Value

Design is the structure, the “bones” of your painting and will determine the success of your work; whether representation or abstract. This valuable resource condenses the important concepts of design/composition and value into visual abstractions so you can easily learn and remember these concepts.

Lesson 10: Oil Painting Procedures

See how I paint a still life painting from the beginning to the finish. Follow along with me and paint a vase and orange still life, as I share my procedure for painting from observation. Learn how to paint convincing form, light and accurate color. From a thumbnail notan sketch, to mixing harmonious complimentary colors, to laying down paint…you will see how your work in the previous lessons pays off big time n this lesson!

Lesson 11: Fall Color, Color Lesson

Paint a beautiful scene from Wanaka, New Zealand with a full warm/cool palette. Paint along with Rose and learn more about her approach to creating a strong composition, color that “sings” and more! From the notan plan, to planning your values and color mixing to the laying, block-in and development paint- step-by-step with Rose to create your own masterpiece.

“Rose Irelan is a consummate and gifted teacher. Although I studied drawing and painting at a well known atelier for seven years, I struggled to get a clear over arching foundation in painting. Rose’s clear, coherent and sequenced curriculum perfectly addressed my needs.” “

Testimonial Janice Z, Retired teacher and Art Journey student

“Rose Irelan’s Art Journey is one of the greatest tools I have as both a seasoned artist and an art teacher. It’s like she took all the nuggets from every class and workshop I’ve taken over the years and compiled them and organized them in one place. I would absolutely recommend this course to both the novice and the professional. Even though I have been painting for decades, Rose’s course helped me organize my space and refine my process so that I can be more effective with my time in the studio.”
