Watercolor painting tutorial with a spooky Halloween theme

One of our favorite activities is using salt to create texture on watercolor paintings. In this activity Salt and Glue are used to turn a simple watercolor painting into the surface of the moon! Leave as is for a great Space themed project or add some black card silhouettes and you have a spooky Halloween picture.

Instructions for creating spooky painted Halloween rocks

1. Prepare the stone for work: wash it with soapy water and wait for it to dry completely.

2. Using a brush, tint the entire surface of the stone with green acrylic paint. After the first layer is completely dry, mark the top oblique cut in the shape of a hat and paint it with pink.

3. Take a yellow marker and in the center of the stone draw two circles of different diameters – these will be the eyes of the zombie. After that, take a black thin marker and draw a smile with crooked teeth, placing the mouth directly under the eyes.

4. Tint zombie’s teeth using a white marker. After that again take a black thin marker and add details to the drawing: draw random scars on the face, add black pupils and nostrils. In the final step, form a believable sinuous brain: on the pink surface of the stone, draw random sinuous lines.

Project Info

  • Black Card
  • Black Watercolor Paint
  • Salt
  • Watercolor Paper
  • White Glue
  1. Cut your watercolor paper into a circle.
  2. Brush water all over the paper.
  3. Now brush black paint over the wet paper.
  4. Whilst the paint is still wet, drop a few circles of white glue onto the surface of the paint. Then sprinkle the salt all over. The salt will absorb the paint making concentrated areas of color and providing texture – make little piles of salt to create darker areas of color in your painting. The glue when dried will have the effect of softening and diffusing the color underneath. In combination these two techniques combine to create the effect of the moon’s surface covered in rocks and craters.
  5. Stick your moon onto a piece of black card. If desired cut out a silhouette from black card and glue on to your moon. To get inspiration for silhouette shapes, do a google image search for “halloween silhouette”.
