Bird house design ideas: 11 cute styles that will attract wildlife to your garden

bird house design ideas: bright colors

Want to welcome more wildlife to your garden? Then these bird house design ideas are for you. Every plot can benefit from the sense of life, movement, and color that fluttering feathered friends bring, and their homes can make a stunning feature, too.

Watching birds is a peaceful and relaxing activity for all ages, but providing a bird house is also beneficial to them in an environmental sense. With the bird populations sadly declining, it’s good to offer a helping hand by providing a safe place for them to nest.

There are tons of styles that you can go for, so it’s easy to choose a design that will blend beautifully into your plot. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite bird house design ideas to get you feeling inspired – just keep scrolling to see for yourself.

Fix it to a fence

This bird house is a real show-stopper. Attached to a blue-grey fence behind, it feels cool and sophisticated and complements the industrial-style shelves nearby beautifully.

Its pointed, tiled roof adds tons of visual interest and we love the black banded details too, which are used to hang it up securely. It’s not just a home for birds – it’s also a stylish focal point.

Opt for an understated palette

A lovely choice for cottage garden ideas, this simple bird house still makes a pretty impact with its soothing tones of mint and white. Hung from a leafy tree, it makes a great spot for birds to nest (and bunting strung up nearby adds a perfect finishing touch).

The hand-painted style adds to its laid-back charm. To recreate the look, why not try painting a plain, wooden design yourself? That way, you can decorate your bird house design ideas to suit the color scheme of your plot. Head over to our best exterior wood paint buying guide for our top picks. Remember to choose non-toxic varieties to keep your bird house design ideas safe for inhabitants.

PAINTED BIRDHOUSE SPRING CRAFT

I’ve joined in with a group of creative bloggers this month for a Spring Craft Challenge. At the end of my post, you’ll find links to click on to see 6 more spring crafts from my blogging friends. Be sure to visit each link so you don’t miss out!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  • unfinished wood birdhouse
  • craft paints
  • artist paint brushes
  • dotting tool
  • gingham ribbon
  • scrapbook paper
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • circle cutter ~ optional
  • fake flower scraps
  • finch bird
  • Mod Podge
  • hot glue

HOW TO PAINT A WOODEN BIRDHOUSE

I chose multiple colors of paint that I thought would coordinate with each other, and that would look complimentary with the decorative embellishments I planned to use.

Use an artist brush to paint all the areas that will be seen. 2 coats will be needed on most everything, but some colors will need 3 coats, such as, white and yellows.

Leave the roof unpainted as you will be covering it with scrapbook paper later in the project.

I used mostly multi-purpose craft paints which are thicker and give better coverage.

HOW TO DECORATE AN INDOOR BIRDHOUSE

I wanted to add embellishments to decorate my painted birdhouse. The spring decorations would add dimension and additional interest compared to just plain paint everywhere. Bring on the embellishment decor!

ADD ROOF SHINGLES:

The roof is made with scrapbook circles.

This step will go much faster if you have a scrapbook circle punch. I don’t own one and they were pricey for me, even with a coupon. Yep, I’m very frugal. (I really mean cheap!)

I chose to make the circle shingles by hand. I traced a button on scrapbook paper to make lots of circles and then cut out each one.

Use Mod Podge to glue on the shingles to the roof. Cut the top ones on the roof peak with straight edges.

ADD GINGHAM RIBBON:

Cut a long strip of ribbon and cut both ribbon ends on an angle.

Start at the base of the cord on one side and begin glueing the ribbon as you wrap. You’ll be weaving in and out of the cord circle. Apply a dot of glue for each wrap around.

ATTACH THE BIRD AND FLOWERS:

Snip the wire from the bird and hot glue it on top of the chimney.

Hot glue your flower pieces inside the fence box.

ADD DOTS AND PAINTED FLOWERS:

Use a dotting tool to paint dots around the heart opening.

Use a tiny artist brush and dotter to paint a variety of flowers and greenery behind the fence.
