Artist Mary Pratt paints a gentle landscape with tranquil waterways and swaying reeds. She creates a dreamy rendering of a brilliant orange light casting over the muted blue sky using her photography as a reference. The eastern shores of Maryland beautifully shine in her charming impressionist depiction. Reflective water against the lush greenery gives the piece a magical effect.
How to paint clouds in oil – Glazing in highlights and shadows for depth.
Oil painting provides artists with a range of techniques to create beautiful and realistic clouds with depth and luminosity. One of the most effective techniques is glazing, which involves layering thin transparent coats of color over one another. In this article, we will focus on how to paint highlights and shadows on clouds using glazing techniques in oil.
1. Start with oiling in. Before you begin painting, prepare your painting by oiling in the surface. This means applying a thin coat of painting medium (50/50 mix) to the canvas to provide a surface for your paint to adhere to and allow the paint to go smoothly.
2. Add the first layer of glaze. To paint the highlights on the clouds, start by mixing titanium white with a medium, such as linseed oil, to create a thin and transparent glaze. Apply this to the areas of the clouds where you want the highlights to be.
3. Build up the highlights. As you apply additional layers of the white glaze, build up the highlights by adding more paint to the areas where you want the highlights to be more prominent. Make sure each layer is thin and transparent, so that the previous layers show through.
4. Add shadows with glazing. To create contrast and give the clouds more dimension, you can add shadows using glazing techniques. Start by mixing a dark color, such as ultramarine blue and raw umber, or cerulean blue with raw umber and a touch of alizarin, with a medium to create a thin and transparent glaze. Apply this to the areas of the clouds where you want the shadows to be.
5. Blend the layers. After each layer has dried, use a blending tool, such as a soft brush or a blending knife, to soften and blend the layers together. This will create a smooth and cohesive look, with subtle variations in color and tone that add depth and luminosity to the clouds.
In conclusion, painting highlights and shadows on clouds using glazing techniques in oil is a great way to create depth and luminosity in your paintings. By oiling in the canvas, adding thin layers of white for highlights, and using glazing to add shadows, you can increase contrast and create stunning and realistic clouds in your paintings.

about this painting:
Sunset on the beach
It is so fantastic to be able to spend the evening on the beach and watch the sunset. In the evening the beach seems to be not as busy as during the day. Here and there you can still see loving couples walking bare feet on the sand which is still warm but not as burning hot as during the daytime. It is the most romantic time of the day on the beach. They are just strolling along the beach line, talking, laughing and enjoying the company of each other. Warm waves are washing their feet with refreshing salty water; cool breeze is playing with their hair and clothes. They seem to be in harmony with nature. Others come here to escape from their problems and worries, to think about their future or make some fundamental decisions, to relax after a long working day, or just to watch the sunset as it is different every day. You will never find two exactly the same sunsets even you decide to take pictures of it every day for, let’s say, a year. Each sunset has its own unique combination of colors. When artists depict dusk, they usually use:
- Dark red and crimson oil paints;
- Pink and purple;
- Gold oil paint;
- Orange and yellow colors;
- Dark blue and even black.
A lonely sail boat
When you sit on the beach you only see the sea and the sky and they seem to have no end. When you realize it, it gives you a thrill. As the night approaches the air becomes thicker so that you can almost taste it. Suddenly on the horizon you see a lonely sail boat. Where is it going? Who is on that boat? Are they also true romantics who wanted to watch the sunset and see what colors nature has in store for us today? Are they fishermen getting ready to reel in their biggest catch tonight or who are already coming back home filled with freshly caught fish? Whoever they are, they are surely enjoying this outstanding show with orange, red and golden colors prepared tonight by the sun for the world to see.
If you purchase this magnificent canvas, it definitely become one of your favorite pieces of art. It will bring back good memories and improve your mood if you have a bad day. Also don’t forget that art is a very good investment.
