The beauty and wonder of Hawai‘i as seen through the eyes of 32 local artists who are also marine and coastal science students, researchers, conservationists, and educators representing eight universities and colleges will be on display at a free, month-long exhibition at The ARTS at Marks Garage in Honolulu’s historic Chinatown district beginning this Friday.

The second annual sci-art exhibition, organized by the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program (Hawai‘i Sea Grant), will kick off on November 3, at 6 pm, for opening night during First Friday with an opportunity to meet the artists, enjoy light pupus and refreshments, and listen to live music by Dr. Kaipo Perez. After opening night, the exhibit will be open to the public every Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 pm through Friday, November 24.

The artwork honors our deep connection to Hawai‘i’s environment and natural resources and showcases the unique perspectives of the artists through many different mediums, a few of which will be offered for sale at the event (a portion of the proceeds will go to UH Foundation to help the Maui community). The public will be immersed in over 60 pieces of art, such as oil paintings highlighting microscopic imagery of coral reef organisms; sculptures depicting the mountains to the sea using repurposed materials discarded from scientific research; drawings of marine mammals sleeping vertically in the water column; glow-in-the-dark ceramic and glass abstract sculptures inspired by coral reefs and the myriad interconnections among the reef and ocean life; and much more.

Dr. Beth Lenz, Hawai‘i Sea Grant’s assistant director for diversity and community engagement who organized and curated the exhibit, noted “This exhibition is an exciting moment for Hawaiʻi Sea Grant to share with our communities. Here, visitors will have the extraordinary opportunity to immerse themselves in the mesmerizing fusion of art and science, where artists from Hawaiʻi and all over the world unveil their own distinct connection with the ocean and the ecosystems they passionately study, conserve, and cherish. This exhibit is a celebration, rich in diverse perspectives and unified by our collective love for the natural world.”

Science by the Sea seminar series

In addition, every Monday during the sci-art exhibit the public will have the opportunity to listen to presentations by graduate students funded by Hawai‘i Sea Grant and the Pacific Islands Climate Adaptation Science Center during the second annual Science by the Sea seminar series, also at The ARTS at Marks Garage. Doors open at 5:30pm and the talks start at 6:00. Come learn about topics such as “Where’s Waldo? Simplifying Detection of Nuisance Species,” “Ocean Chemistry off the Coast of Lahaina,” “In Hot Water: Forecasting Fisheries under Climate Change,” and more!

Voice of the Sea television show

On closing night, Friday, November 24, a new episode of Hawai‘i Sea Grant’s television show Voice of the Sea, “SMMILE for Marine Mammals,” will be screened at The ARTS at Marks Garage at 6:00pm, and the audience will have the opportunity to talk story with the creators and students of the Summer Marine Mammal Intensive Learning Experience for Hawai‘i high school students.

The University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program is part of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s prestigious School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. It supports an innovative program of research, education, and extension services directed to increasing sustainability of coastal and marine resources and resilience of coastal communities of the state, region, and nation. Sharon Deegan

I am an artist based in Marbella, Spain. I create highly textured abstract pieces on canvas with shining metallic embellishment. My inspiration comes from many things but mostly from the natural world, the fury of the sea, the calm reflections of water, the delicacy of a summer bloom and the beauty of the underwater world. I love textures and surface interest and tactile, textile inspired artwork. Recurring themes in much of my work are flowing images, I like the idea of movement and that nothing stands still and is always changing. Metallic paints and iridescent paints are used in most of my work; again there is the idea of constant change as the metallics in the paintings look different in daylight or electric light and even when viewe.
